63-66 bumper hole spacing

Can anyone tell me the spacing between the holes in a front bumper? The 60-62 has a 26 1/4" spacing. I'm hoping the 63-66 is wider and will fit my non factory frame better.

Re: 63-66 bumper hole spacing

I remember hearing folks at a cruise last year talking about the difference in the rear bumpers because of the frame width difference. I know that the 60-62 are narrower in the rear. so I am thinking it is probably the same up front. Unfortunately I do not know the dimensions to help.

Re: 63-66 bumper hole spacing

I apologize for such a slow response to your simple request. I have measured both my '62 and my '66 and they are exactly the same at 26 3/16". Good luck.

Thanks for checking.

If the spacing is the same, why do they sell two different bumpers? Is it the side support hole?

It's the front bumper I'm interested in. At Classic Chevy Parts they sell a front bumper for 60-62 and one for 63-66. http://www.classicparts.com/Bumpers/products/242/

What's the difference?

the difference may be contour, not certain. do have both early and late bumpers but one is at a different location.
I do have a 62 frt bumper for my 64
my reference to the rear was a quote to someone else who stated that the rear was narrower on the 60-62

I believe that it may be the profile of the lower part of the bumper. newer one may taper back more. I don't think that the bumper guards fit properly from the one era to the other

how can you tell what year of bumper you have. My registration says it is a 63 but it has a 62 grill and torsion bars.

perhaps you got one of those trucks that was never wanted during the 62 selling year and then it waited for some cheap SOB to come along and get it at a discounted price as last years model.
some places didn't register the year until it was sold. if your truck was sold in oct. 62 say when the 63 production was out, it got registered as a 63

Re: 63-66 bumper hole spacing

I don't have the dimensions for the different front bumpers handy, but I can get that info tomorrow if someone else doesn't beat me to it. The rear frame on the '60-'62's is wider than the '63 and up trucks. The side to side hole spacing on the '63-'66 frame horns is close if not the same as '67-'87 trucks.

the frame horns are 3/4" wider on the earlier frames than they are on the 80 frames. .perhaps when your frame horn extensions were welded on they were not spaced out far enough??
on the 84 4 x 4 frame that I have here the outside top of the frame is 28" and then tapers in to the bottom(same place where yours is cut off). my 64 frame horn measures 28 3/4" and is straight down. a 62 bumper fits om mine

Ok, I have an answer. The holes are the same spread width-wise on early and late front bumpers. What differs is the spread between holes vertically. early bumpers ('62) have a spread of about 3 3/8" center to center, with the upper hole center down about 3 7/16" from the top edge of the bumper. On later bumpers ('65) the vertical spread is 4 7/8" c to c with the upper hole center at 2 3/4 down from the top edge. If there is a difference in profile, it's not easy to see without a cross section comparison, but the difference in hole spacing is plain as day if you look for it. Funny how you don't notice some things until someone suggests you open your eyes. So lame it took this long to get you that info. Hope this helps

here's a '62 and a '63 for side by side comparison. not very good pics, but you can easily see the difference in spacing.

your right. I orig checked that 62 of mine for mounting and the lateral holes lined up, but I had taken the time to bolt it on I would have found that out. mine orig had a winch bumper,so the frame horns were missing and I replaced them. That was when I was checking out the spacing for the bumpers holes for width.
the vertical distance does make sense as the earlier frames are not as high as the later frames

Re: 63-66 bumper hole spacing

After learning the information from above, mine must be a 63-66 bumper on a 60. My frame is not original. Thus it could have came from any year. It's good to ID the bumper since I want to put the matching one on the rear.

Just wanted to verify that Ron (padresaq) is correct regarding the different shape of the 60-62 to the 63-66.
Although width wise the front of the 60-66 frames are the same distance apart laterally, the space of the bolts vertically are different. Also as Ron mentioned; the shape/contour of the 60-62 bumpers are different than the 63-66.
I was hoping to use a 65 cut off section of the frame horns on my 62 frame to repair my cracked 62 frame horns, but the cross section contours are different.
Also, you can see this shape difference if you look at the side by side comparison pics that oem4me posted,
