Re: *** 400/406 sbc BUILDERS PLEASE READ ***

Spend a little extra on head gaskets. I have had trouble with the blue ones in the 19 years since I built my 406. I found a good selection at Jegs recently, Cometic I think.

I've built a few 400's and you are gonna love the torque. I have a few tips for you.
1. Have the block surfaced/squared. 400's are bad about not being square. This is why people have head gasket issues.

2.Have it aligned honed. You will need a special rear main seal.

3.Don't use the stock 5.65" rods. Use at least 5.7" rod.

4.Modify your Vortec's for at least 525 lift.

The last one I did I used a Lunati Voodoo cam 504/525 lift with some AFR 195 heads and it is a great all around combo. Its in a 69 Camaro w/ a 5 speed. I would go one size smaller on the cam for a truck.
