Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

If it’s that big ugly yellow handled valve, there are nicer looking ones available.

Something like this.

Smile Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

that's a nice handle but I am not overly worried about the yellow one (but I agree - it is a bit ugly).

Brother feels he has all the Gremlins out of the truck. Here is a cool photo, this old store is a bit down the road from him in Kilgore, Tx (the store is actually in Henderson, TX).

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Well I’m in Kilgore, bringing my truck home on Monday (about 280 mile drive).

I’ve installed all my LEDs (headlights, all markers, tail, backup, cargo, and in cab dome). I’m like a 100,000 watt Xmas tree! The front markers, that also blink on a 72 was fun but there was a great thread here on the forms for the 3 wire setup! One of the front bumper marker screws were totally frozen in and I had to bust out the plastic. I hated doing that. For my front side blinking markers this post by 9teen69 made it a SNAP!

For the head lights, that was a pain as the cans (the bit that has the adjusting screws/spring) where on inverted for left and right. Took me like 10 minutes to figure why my LED headlight wouldn’t line up to the “top”! I’ll have to adjustments when I get home, I’m sure they are pointed crazy eyed LOL.

Tomorrow it will be installing my tilt column and may be the tach. But I’ll likely leave the tach for when I get home.

It was sooo great to drive the truck and work on it too!

Monday morning I’ll stand out in the front 40 and listen intently for the sweet sound of your new motor purring as you cruise on home!
Congrats!

Well, so much for waiting to get home to put the tach in. Sadly the socket that was for the non-tilt column was busted. So I’m short a light socket :’(

I think you already addressed the bolt in the hole by the fuel pump correctly, but I thought I would share anyway. This pic is from one of the trucks sold at the Lambrecht Chevy auction a few years ago. This engine has 3.7 miles on it so Im reasonably sure this is how the factory left it.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

My drive from Kyle to Austin was a bust twice this morning:

1. 10 miles out, truck lost power at hill tops. Distributor nut was not tighten and of course the time went out!

2. almost 2 miles out, nearly the same thing but ended up being the fuel pump. It was the only part reused when the engine was pulled. My brother cussed up a storm saying he should have never tried to save that $18.00. Well he also cussed about the distributor being loose too ha!

Going to try again tomorrow for home. We did two test drives, one 20 mile and one 50 around Henderson/Kilgore/Lake Port.

Here is the truck loaded with my Brother's 78 Wurlitzer jukebox

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

well, still having a intermittent missing / hesitation and a hot start issue. The hot start I can work around but getting missing / hesitation within 10 miles of my trip is a no-go for me. Since once I get to far from my brothers that would be a pain for all of us.

My column from 70shortfleet ending up having a right turn cancel issue. Luckily I wanted to pull the wheel off since I had it a few teeth off from center (which is really annoying). After giving the left cancel spring more "spring" my problem was fixed. I am just no sure how long that will last....

But on top of ALL of that drama, when I was going back to my brothers my very back tail pipe bracket nut came off! While the tailpipe, muffler, etc seems to be okay at least one rubber bracket snapped (the one on the muffler itself).

So much FUN! Ugh! LOL

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

The saga continues: fuel tank will get pulled and get cleaned/sealed.

On top of that, when unloading the jukebox I ended up bending my tailgate. Which is a reproduction because it’s flimsy as hell. When I would sit on it or jump up into the bed it would buckle. For the record I’m a bit under 200, so not overly fat ;-)

So getting a tailgate from GMC Paul’s and my brother will have his paint & body finish it up. Not sure if insurance will pay, as it was already dented slightly when I bought it.

They don't have a need to know, as we used to say in the security biz.

That top bolt hole is so you can carefully use a longer bolt to hold the pushrod right?

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Thanks to Leon aka LocDoc, I'll have a complete Spare Tire setup (well minus a rum and tire). I'll should even be able to get the bracket off to paint with my tailgate too.

Though it has been pointed out that I need to install the bracket correctly on my truck ;-)

Many thanks to Leon for these great items!

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Tailgate is in! Still waiting for Trim and Tailgate Appliqué. While I ordered a hardware kit, seems no fasteners come with it. I am a bit bummed and if they were not included in the kit I am surprised GMCPauls description did not say this :'(

I also have my bag for my tire tools! YAY

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

thank you MAC71Cheyenne!

fasteners ordered. One thing, my brother seems to have the option that the tailgate hard ware should not be painted to match the truck's paint (like the PO had done). Though searching around the forums this has been talked about and it seems the consensus is is: "Body color on the hinges and straps. Nothing on the trunnion". So I guess I am going with that! Now to convince my brother ha!

Also after visiting GMCPaul's Tailgate/Trim page more than a few times I ordered the Chrome handle. I know this only came with a Cheyenne Super but I got tired of skipping it, so I ordered it this time around with the fasteners LOL!

Pre-Paint fit of Side Mount and tailgate!

Brother says this new tailgate weighs a ton, compared to the old one. On the old one he can cause the tailgate to flex by pinching with his hand, no such moment on the new one. Also, he says the new tailgate fits MUCH better than the old one. I am so happy to hear this about the new tailgate.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Nice tailgate, and a good looking job on the in-bed spare mount! I have no tailgate, because of the camper shell. I tried to find it to sell, but my FiL probably horse-traded it for something. I put my spare mount behind the wheel well. I'm an old man and don't want to crawl over a bunch of packed goodies to get to the spare when we're out camping and have a flat. I guess I could make the AAA tow truck driver dig it out. Yeah, that was just mean.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

funny, I thought about that too - if I wanted to put the Side Mount up closer to the tailgate for the same reason. Hoping in the bed is such a PITA but I ended up more worried about the tire blocking my view if I put it closer to the tailgate. The mirrors on this truck really suck, IMO (though they are cool looking).

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

one thing I keep looking at with the photo of the Side Mount installed on my bed, my bed's mat has that triangle indention. I wonder if the mat is expecting a side mount to be closer to the head of the bed?

I sent a zillion photos of the Side Mount as installed from a number of forum posting, so my bother installed it as in those photos (also send the install diagram too).
