283 starter problems.

I have a 283 motor that had a powerglide trans. I want to put a 350 trans on it. My problem is a got a mimi starter. It will not line up with the holes on the bottom of the block.

I wouldn't think it should be any different from a powerglide to a Th350.

Re: 283 starter problems.

You have contradicting statements here. The trans does not change anything about how the started bolts up to the block as long as you are using the same diameter/tooth count flexplate.

Re: 283 starter problems.

Does your mini started have only the staggered bolt holes and your block have the straight across holes? If so, you'll just have to get a starter that has the correct straight across bolt holes to match the block. Some of the older blocks were not machined for both style of starters. Didn't you already have a starter on the block with the powerglide?

Re: 283 starter problems.

I remember 1 of the mini starters wont bolt up because it needs to be rotated on the starter body to be able to line up to the holes. Is the started solenoid preventing the starter from lining up correctly?

No the bolt hole is off about 1/4. One goes in and the other is off.

Re: 283 starter problems.

Sounds like you have the wrong starter but not sure what that has to do with the transmission?

Re: 283 starter problems.

Why would you buy a mini starter for 163 bucks when you can get a plain ole GM starter that costs a lot less...the 283 engine rebuilt or is it used ? The GM starters have different noses on them, just know which flexplate you are going to buy....168 tooth or 153 tooth....you said you were installing a TH350, did it come with a TC and flexplate ? Make sure the starter matches up with the flexplate as well.... the 153 tooth flexplate is smaller in diameter so the nose on the starter will be different than a 168 tooth flexplate......
ONe more question, will a flexplate that bolts to th350 TC bolt up to the 1961 283 crank ?

Good Luck !!!!!

I wanted a mini starter because i will install headers. The 283 just got rebuilt. The th350 did not come with a flexplate. I just found out the mini starter did not fit because the 283 motor is a 1958 to a 1962 thats why.
