90 4x4 starter issue

Have a just bought 90 chev truck, starter worked intermittently, thought it was the neutral start switch. Stopped working all together, power to starter, can hear the solenoid working, will not turn over. Pulled starter bench tested it and it turns over. Used jumper cable to starter from power wire in truck to the starter and it spins. Put it back in truck will not turn over. Not sure of what to check next. Could this be a gone bad starter? It was an $800 Can truck, missing one exhaust doughnut and the other was so loose it was leaking as much as the missing one could this have damaged starter?

Re: 90 4x4 starter issue

Drove the 40k to town, had it tested, starter good, solenoid bad. Now have $831.00 +1 exhaust doughnut truck. I always thought solenoids either worked or didn't work, was surprised by this outcome. Love that load testing by 2x4.
