Best trasfercase for mudding..

I am taking all my left over 73-87 chevy truck parts and building a mud truck... What is the best trasfercase and gear ratio for a 35-38in tall tire shortbed. I wont be rock climbing or nothing just all out bogging.. I assume I wont need a doubler or anything.. Its a major budget build using nothing buy useless leftover parts so I want to spend my money wisley... thanks!!!!

I'll toss in a vote for the NP205 also, it is an all gear box, unlike the NP203 that has a chain.

Re: Best trasfercase for mudding..

The 205 is first choice, lighter than the 203 and gear driven. Harder to find with the T400 input shaft. The 203 is very heavy and is a tough unit for chain drive. Part way through the 78 model year they were given different chain and gear pitch for less probability of slippage after wear and abuse. The 1979 203's were best of them. The original BEARFOOT used a 203.

Re: Best trasfercase for mudding..

my reccomendations:
an np200,gear drive just like the 205,but has dropped outputs for better driveline angles.however has straight cut gears and makes a little more noises and heat on highway runs.
or "the beast" like im running. a t-136 rockwell ,both can be found for cheep, mine was less than $200.00!
however......the t-136 weighs about 400 POUNDS!
i have seen them taking a severe beating with 750hp and 60" tall tires and never break!!the t136 will get you about 12" of driveline drop and does have helical cut gears,so its more roadworthy.
but then again,im building a 10k pound k5,so my views may be a little distorted from the average mudder!!

Re: Best trasfercase for mudding..

what did the np200 or the rockwell come in???? straight cut gears are fine... truck will never be road worthy.
