Re: Duramax question

Definitely understand that. I just bought my first home last year and still having to put money into fixing it up. I'd rather spend the money on tools and parts for the truck, but then I'd have an empty house!

But an evening bump...anybody have any ideas on an engine stand to hold the 5.9 6bt cummins monster up? It's 1100#s and I've heard good and bad about the 2000# harbor freight one, but I don't want to spend a ton of money on one!

I have a home made one I use that is made out of 4" square tubing 1/4" wall. I bolt the adapter on the back with 4 12.9 or stronger bolts. I have a support to go under the front of the engine to make myself feel better. Most of the time I use this stand:

http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/pr...-ENGINE-STAND/

These engines fit nice on these and the stand is pretty sturdy. Most of the time, I assemble the short block, then set the assembled short block on the ground and assemble the cylinder head and set it on the short block. Torquing 26 bolts at 140ft lbs or more on an engine stand isn't fun so I don't do it.

What do you think about this? I like the look of the legs being that far out and it looks a llittle sturdier than the harbor freight one.

Re: Duramax question

Not sure if you ever decided to put a duramax or cummins under the hood and being very bias to chevy i can admit i like the cummins i just got another one a few days ago and i love it all over again although my cousin has an 02 i think and its a great truck it has an edge programmer and 280k miles and on the second allison tranny but it pretty sweet either motor would be good as long as its not a power stroke

In terms of the front axle why not leave it passenger side drop to use an old manual shift 4wd you can bolt old transfer cases to new trannys as i figured out the np241 adapter from my 91 suburban is the exact same adapter from a 1999-2000 6.0 with a 4l80 although i'm not 100% sure if they can bolt to a diesel allison tranny it might bolt to the gas allison tranny but i could possibly check the bolt pattern for the diesel as my cousins tranny might still be at our shop

Re: Duramax question

Hey thanks for the input mr.250r. Yeah I've pretty much decided the cummins just because I don't want my truck down for a decade. There would be a lot more fab to figure out with the duramax and ally. I am wanting to go front axle and I'm not sure about the gas ally either, but everything I have researched the ally only excepts the newer tcase from chevy's which are all driver side drop. I guess i could still do that and just buy a ford front axle and change the hubs and all over to chevy. But I think with the cummins I'll be getting a nv4500 and hook a np205 to it. It's not an "exact" fit, but pretty dang close from what I see. Who knows if a duramax rolled up in my yard or a deal that I just couldnt pass up came around I could flop back to wanting to put the dmax in. I really wont be 100% sure until I am halfway into the project and cant look back. That's part of the fun of this is dreaming! I can't tell you how awesome this site is and the tech info that is giving that allows even guys like me to dream and not be afraid to tackle things slowly and document them very well.

Re: Duramax question

Forgot to add there is an adapter you can buy from destroked, I believe, that will allow you to mate a np271 to the ally for a passenger side drop. I may be wrong though too.

Re: Duramax question

Well I figured out the Allison is still at the shop and so is the transfer case so I should be able to put them together and tell you tomorrow when I'm up there

I think that one looks similar to mine and you should be fine with it. Just be careful with one fully assembled on there.
