I'm totally with you on keeping the money local and doing the work yourself, I have always made my own step side bed wood too. I made a nice router jig on my last one.

Thanks Mike, I need to do another video of the engine running fresh plugs and have the timing dialed in finally and it's running awesome, was running rich and a little sputtery in that video. How did you do your router jig? I'm trying to decide if it would be best to cut grooves with the table saw or a router?

Thanks, I had originally wants to do all Stewart Warner but was having a hard time finding the stuff I was wanting so shifted gears and went for the Old Time White Auto Meter's and still have Stewart Warner cheapy's on the bottom row. Something I may go back later on down the road and change to match the top.

The shop that's working on the bed sides just opened in Ottawa, Bowling Collision and Custom, LINK he fixed the damage to the cab I'm using also that was before he launched the full-time business, Ryan Bowling is the owner and is one of the most hard working meticulous guys around. So far he's keeping busy with insurance crack up's but does also have some slower moving complete custom and full restoration work happening, my stuff I asked that he put at the bottom of his priority list and it's worked well, he's getting around to them now and I'm just about ready for them. Body work is not my thing I've rediscovered that about myself in this process. I don't have the patience or the eyes to see what you need to see to get parts straight. I do like welding in patches.

Been a good week so far. Bed sides came home today.

Was able to pick up some oak for the bed floor last weekend.

I did it a couple ways, I have done a few sets. The first set, I just got a straight piece of wood and build a guide fence, cut all the shallow cuts first, then came back and cut all the deeper cuts with the smaller bit.
On another set, I made an aluminum bracket that mounted to the router. Basically, an adjustable stop that slide with it to keep the width consistent.
I'm a tight wad so I always look for a cheap way to do things even it takes more time.

Yes! Green paint soon! Not going to have it done by the 4th of July but maybe I'll be painting by the end of July...

Haven't got much to report last weekend was the lake trip and we had a great time other than the baby caught a stuffy nose. The truck when on the back burner to get the camper up to par for the weekend. Wanted to post a quick picture and a solution to a problem I had with using an electric fuel pump. With it bolted to the frame I could really hear it in the cab, even just moving the truck around I knew it would become a annoyance very quickly once the truck is done and I'm using it again. I went on a search for a solution and what I found all but eliminated the noise from the fuel pump.

I found these at Grainger Part #: 2NPA1

They're rubber motor isolation pads.

Also planning on painting all the bed pieces this weekend. I was going to try and do that and the front clip at the same time but my garage isn't big enough. Seems like the smart thing to because getting the bed back together is going to be a big project. Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

Cheap easy similar solution: Beeeg Theeek Mudflaps from tsc or wherever. Lop off a chunk, drill a hole, ta da! Vibration Isolator. Looks Good! Hope Baby dries up soon!

Yeah good point, Found those for a few bucks apiece and they were in stock, love me some grainger so went that route. Going to use your idea when I bolt the bed to the frame if I can find me a mud flap laying around.

Over the weekend we finally got the bed painted. An early day on Sunday got started at 4 AM cleaning and getting the garage set up to paint so we could beat the heat. Ended up finishing up around 3 in the afternoon.

Thanks Chip! Still have the front clip to do, but getting this assembled and the bed wood finished will keep me busy for a while, then I can get the rest of the sheet metal done, really only hood and fenders left. Wet sand, buff and I can just about say this is a done deal.

It is really insane how much time it takes, I don't do it very often, so half of the time was preparing the work space. I was so happy we were done by 4 in the afternoon, so we weren't fighting with bugs when we were shooting clear...

Loving the cool weather! But, we got a little girl that isn't wanting to fall asleep until 10 or later so I didn't make it into the garage last night unfortunately. But tonight and tomorrow are supposed to be nice before it gets hot again on Sunday. So I might be able to accomplish a little something this weekend, I'm hoping to get the bed wood done if I can get these grooved cuts figured out. I have enough wood to do it if I don't screw up. A little progress, got the places where the sun won't shine painted black.

Over the weekend I blasted and zinc plated the pieces of the bed that needed refreshing. I didn't take pictures of the process but I did use distilled water for the rinse this time and immediately followed that with WD40 and some 00 steel wool and they came out really good I think. My little Eastwood zinc plating kit paid for itself again.

And got the wheel tubs bolted back on. I wasn't sure if GM put anything in between the tub and bed side when they originally assembled, but I had some strip putty/caulk stuff for RV's (they use it on all the stuff like doors, windows,basically anything that screws through the outer layer of a camper) So I used that, I figured it would be fine and that it should have something in there.

Spent a bunch of time cleaning and getting my tools put away again. Going to start cutting boards tonight. If I get all that done I'll get busy with the router.

Lenses just make everything better.

Boards ripped and cut to length other than the short boards going to cut the grooves on those before cutting to length but I'm ready for the router.

Willie dog had to make a cameo on the build. That's the look for it's time to get out of the hot garage and go to bed.

Oh baby picks you want I could fill this page up... She's getting so big, turned 6 months last week.

In that last one I asked her what she thought of Ford's

Didn't get the bed put together this weekend but I did get all the boards all ready to go and going to try and get the bed sides and bolts in this week after work, and it will be nice not to have to sweat too much while I'm at it.

Also had to make a router table out of an old piece of Ikea furniture, and a piece of MDF. Worked out great, and I didn't have to buy a router table which is even better.
