Re: Rear end Question on 56..

The spring perches will have to be moved, but the wieth is ok. I would pass on the column, but that's just me. I would us a tilt with no key.

Re: Rear end Question on 56..

I looked at your previous post, I like the GM van columns 60's & 70's and I think the early 80's don't have the key in them. I have used the 60's GM cars before and put a piece of tubing on them to slick them up abit. it covers up the trashy fish net looking webbing on it.

Re: Rear end Question on 56..

I believe that rear end is the same width as the stock one, you will have to move perches. I installed a 68 Camaro diff in mine 2" narrower, you can run a little deeper wheel. I have a van tilt, I didn't want the key in the column look. They are getting hard to find and of course more expensive, most will need to be rebuildt.

Re: Rear end Question on 56..

Look at my thread for a different perspective on the column (posts 105-120). I used an 82 Eldo that has tilt/telescope, shift, key, signals, 4 way switch, dimmer and cruise in the column. I wanted my shifter off the floor, got tired of the kids in the middle seat kicking it out of gear in the woods. I wanted key and start in one place. Getting the dimmer off the floor is one less thing to cut carpet around. Cruise is nice for a future project. I am going to cover the bottom exposed with a piece of custom metal or a leather cover to match the seats.

Re: Rear end Question on 56..

I did a 47 for a customer a few years ago and I used a tilt colum from an 85 chevy van. Wipers, dimmer, key shifter and shift indicator all there. Worked out real nice.
