Re: Ol Yeller - 71 Cheyenne SWB BB

How did you miss it? I'm amazed you found it!

I'm not making much headway on it. We've had a pretty mild winter ( until yesterday ), so mild I've managed to get a fair amount of golf in. I've got to finish up the interior - install the headliner and finish wiring the tach and the radio.

Next, I intend to work on the engine compartment. I intend to have that done in time for some summer cruising. Meanwhile I'm gathering parts for a suspension rebuild, Air Ride set up.

Thanks for dropping in, the encouragement gets me motivated.

Thanks Cam

The dash pad started life black. I painted it using Vinyl Prep and then 4 light coats of SEM Super White. I covers really well and does not fill in the grain, and of course is a perfect match of the console which was painted with the same paint.

I also used it to paint a saddle headliner too. Good stuff.

Re: Ol Yeller - 71 Cheyenne SWB BB

Hey Mike,

Thanks for checking in!

The only thing new is that I drove it 25 miles to my shop and it made it with no issues. Every gauge in the tach dash I put in worked, and that's miracle - I usually get to wrestle with electrical issues, but this one went straight.

The other thing i found out is how much better it runs with the HEI dizzy properly wired - using a straight 12v source.

Other than that, nothing on the truck. I'm working on installing Air Ride in the Novocayne.

Shockwaves up front and Cool Ride on the back, E3 controller. First time doing this, it's been fun so far.

Also got the Strong Arms and new trailing arms too. Hopefully it will handle less like the Hindenburg when I'm done.

Ate you gonna be ready for Good-Guys?

Re: Ol Yeller - 71 Cheyenne SWB BB

It's been a while, but I got a couple things done this weekend. The drivers side door latch disintegrated, so I replaced it. Those bastiges are a PITA. I started replacing it a month ago. I picked up a repop unit from Classic Chevy, and didn't figure out I had the passenger side until i got back to the shop. Picked up another one and after about an hour of scraping up my arm in the 100* heat, I left. Then last weekend got it done in about 5 minutes. Sometimes you got to back away.

I also had a chance to stop by TeeItUp's place a couple weekends ago to pick up my tailgate. I stopped by on the way to Kansas City to get a 1970 Cutlass SX my cousin bought. Ever heard of one? It's a 442 in Supreme clothes. It was Oldsmobiles way around the increasing premiums the insurance companies were beginning to hit muscle cars with.

Anyway with the addition of the tailgate, Ol Yeller is now the same color all the way around. It's pretty cool how the Ochre from at least three different trucks has faded out so consistently, although I need to give the gate a CLR treatment to get it closer. I'll get better pics this weekend.

Your truck is coming along, the tailgate made a difference. That Cutlass is a good looking car in Black too!

Re: Ol Yeller - 71 Cheyenne SWB BB

Hey Jonathan, at least I'm sticking with it!
I admit Ochre's not my favorite, but it does have that 70's panache going for it.

Mike, it's amazing how much better this thing looks all one color. It's been fun hunting down pieces of that color. I've been pretty lucky to have someone likeTeeitup relatively close that is such a great resource for used parts. Every panel I've needed has come from him.

If the Biscayne weren't taking up so much of my time I'd be redoing the suspension and the engine compartment. But it's driving good right now so at least I can enjoy it.

Re: Ol Yeller - 71 Cheyenne SWB BB

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. I'm doing almost exactly the same kind of build with my '72 SWB. Trying to find original paint body panels is a bugger especially when you're looking for specific colors! I was wondering if you ever had the chance to listen to your new radio?

I've actually grown to love Ochre. I'd be extremely proud to rock a truck like yours with a little patina....especially lowered with some nice rims

Yes, I have heard the radio, and it sounds pretty good, but 1) I'm no audiophile, 2) not sure how good the speakers are performing in the door, and 3) there is no amp. It beats the hell out of what was in there before - the stock am/fm. I'd buy it again for sure.

I've got the parts to lower it, and put rack and pinion in it. It's got leafs, and I bought a set of lowering spring for it. You don't like my Vette Grand Sport wheels?

Well, that took an unexpected turn.

Better picture of the gate...

Here's a picture of the old gate for comparison purposes. It's in great shape. Some day when I repaint this rascal, I'll use it.
