1941 Suburban

This thread is really for my dad (Muleman100) who just bought a 1941 Suburban to go with his 1941 Stakebed. The suburban was purchased from an 84 year old man in Reno, NV who owned it for the last 42 years. He said that he paid $100 and two small gold nuggets worth about $70 for it. He drove it while he lived in Nevada and while he lived in San Diego. I do not know if he ever lived in San Francisco but we did find a 1966 Chevron map of San Francisco in the glove box and a ticket from the city of San Francisco for being illegally parked rolled up in between some of the roof panels. The previous owner said that the old 216 gave up the ghost years ago and a more modern 235 was put in its place. After running the cast numbers we were able to determine that it was a 1953 235 originally put into a truck with a hydroboost set up. The reason why it has Mexico license plates is that he said he had relatives down there register it down there because it was cheaper than paying California registration.

You will have to forgive the gas can on the fender. It has been a couple of years since the suburban was driven regularly and want junk to get into the carburator.




The original color was green but the previous owner re painted it brown and called it the "Root Beer" truck.





The plan is to get it mechanically sound and drive it the way it is for a while and than in 2 or 3 years tear it completely apart for a total restoration.

The more modern 235 engine. The suburban still has the old four speed transmission and rear end.




The front windshield wouldn't roll open, but all of the side windows rolled down with ease.




Someone took out all of the original seats. Right now the front seats are out of a 50s Dodge truck. We have 47-53 suburban seats that we are going to put in it until we find original seats.

It is hard to see in this picture but it was interesting to see that the suburbans actually have wood structuring like older 30s model cars have. Not only that but the inside window frames are wooden.







Getting a little East Texas rain to wash a little of the Nevada desert dust off.

Thanks for all of the positive comments everyone! We are glad to see that there are others that appreciate these old burbs. I will keep everyone posted on any progress that we make. Below are some pictures of my dad's (Muleman100) matching 1941 stakebed.

There was an article in "Hemmings Classic Car" within the last couple months on this body style Suburban. It had a really nice red and black one in the article.

Ferrofil, Thanks! We are slowly starting to tackle small projects on it. We have the tank cleaned and installed, and the brakes working so far. Next new gauges and wiring.

Jonboy, Thanks. I actually read that article before we got this burb. At the time we were second in line to get this suburban and it looked like it was going to someone in Michigan. Fortunately for us everything worked in our favor. While reading that article and seeing that gorgeous red and black suburban I was thinking how much it was going to suck if we weren't able to get this suburban.

Thanks for the reply's everyone. Right now we are re doing the wiring and we found a set of original seats in Ohio. We'll have it at the big hot rod show in Austin this April. Hopefully some of you will get a chance to see it in person.
