I'm stumped on this noise

My nephew has an 04 K1500 5.3 "T". The other day he said it was making a lifter noise and brought it by my shop for advice yesterday. I couldn't narrow it down with the limited time I had to spare so I told him to bring it to my house today. The sound is strongest on left bank towards rear. This afternoon he stopped by and the noise is louder than last night. We pulled the bank 1 cover and saw nothing obvious.

I'm familiar with the lifter, wrist pin and piston skirt noises these are known for but this dry scrape noise has me stumped. I tried posting a video but something about security token prevents it. The sound is rhythmic and sounds like it's isolated to one cylinder. Disconnecting coils one at a time made no change

Please help, thank you

Dry scrape noise...like windage tray is rubbing on crank?

Re: I'm stumped on this noise

I'm having trouble imagining that happening. Tray is below crank. But a similar sound I suppose.

Addition, no loss of oil pressure yet

Re: I'm stumped on this noise

i had one in the other day for the same nosie on the driver side rear i though motor was knocking ended up shooting carb cleaner down the push rod, couple of cans, then flushed with oil, changed the oil put a full can of seafoam in it and ran it for about 30 mins then changed the oil again and also did an upper cylinder cleaning noise was gone after all this, im thinking a piece of carbon was stuck in the lifter

Re: I'm stumped on this noise

I'll let you know for sure with pics once I get it tore down. But I put a stethascope on #7 exh rocker and it was real loud. I switched #7 and #3 exh rockers and it stayed on 7. I'm thinking the roller on lifter has gone south. Nephew opted to swap in a lower mileage engine. I am keeping the old one

Re: I'm stumped on this noise

He found a used 107,000 mile 5.3 for $900 and we swapped it in last weekend at home. He gave me the old one and it sold for $300 before I had a chance to open it up
