Exclamation Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Hey guys. Trying to finish up my L31 5.7 vortec swap but I'm a dummy when it comes to wiring. Hopefully VETTEVETT will see this as I also will be wiring in a CS130D alternator and was hoping to post a few pictures about that later on in this thread.

I have a holley mighty mite fuel pump on the frame rail. I also bought a relay kit from Jegs that I have mounted on my firewall by the blower fan housing. Another thing I bought was an oil pressure safety switch from jegs screwed in above the oil filter.

I see there are different styles of oil pressure switches. The one I have has three terminals and are labeled as followed. NO(normally open) NC(normally closed) and C(Common)

The relay I bought has a ground wire, fuel pump wire, ignition wire, and power lead wire with circuit breaker I will install inline.

I bought a 5 amp inline fuse per the instructions with the fuel pump that I will place inline with the fuel pump power wire(I think?)

So all of these kits come with instructions on how to wire them separately but I am having trouble figuring out how to wire them all together and not blow anything up. Electrical is my kryptonite. Please help me get this thing on the road safely.

Alternator stuff will come later, but I think its good to note here that I will be running new wire for this as the alternator is on the passenger side with my new setup and I will be using a bus bar/4 post junction block on the fender well to route power per VETTEVETS instructions.

Thank you all so much for your words of wisdom and kindness on this forum and I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Sincerely,
Chefk85

Here is a diagram to start with for the fuel pump. You didn't mention if this is to supply a carb or EFI. I assume carb?

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Hello I see you are getting some excellent help.
Being carburetor simplifies the project because we don't have to worry about primer wiring.

Here's the instructions in case you haven't seen them on the website. i think you probably have though.

Universal Electric Fuel Pump Relay Kit
WARNING! Check for leaks before starting your vehicle.
Installation Instructions:
For best results mount the Fuel Pump Relay in close proximity to the electric fuel pump.
Be sure to route wires in a manner so that they do not chafe on any sharp metal edges and use proper terminals and
connectors at all connecting points to insure proper fuel pump function. Use wire nuts, solder and heat shrink tubing
or crimp connectors to make all of the electrical connections. We do not recommend the use of electrical tape as a
means to make and hold connections together.
1. Secure the relay assembly with the included sheet metal screw. You may use this attachment for the GREY
ground wire if it is making direct contact with a ground, such as the chassis or underbody sheet metal. If the relay
is attached to a plastic or other non-conductive material be sure to route and secure the GREY wire ground to a
known ground.
2. The circuit breaker should be mounted close to the positive 12volt power source.
3. Attach the PURPLE 12-gauge wire from the relay to the fuel pump positive connection as indicated by fuel pump
manufacturer.
4. Attach the 18 gauge YELLOW wire to an independent (Off/On) fuel pump switch, which is powered by a fused
12 volt source.
5. Cut the large 10 gauge RED wire to the necessary length and attach to a known “hot source”, such as the battery
or + lead at the starter solenoid.
6. Attach the remaining length of RED wire between the unused side of the circuit breaker and the battery + source.
Ignition or Yellow 18ga.
On/Off Switch Relay
Grey 18ga. Ground
Circuit
Breaker Ground
Red 10ga. Red 10ga. Purple 12ga.

Ground
+ -
Battey
Fuel Pump
1-800-345-4

I would like to know if you are just wanting to run the fuel pump through the Oil pressure switch or if you want to kill the ignition as well?

If your amp rating is low enough on the pump you could just run the ground side of the pump through the OP switch and run the hot side through the breaker. It depends on the amperage rating of the OP switch. but you might not need the relay. Then you could run your solenoid purple wire to the NC side of the OP switch like 67 burb shows to give you fuel while cranking.

Just thinking out loud here.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

I appreciate both of you chiming in here to help me out. Vettevett, as far as running both a relay and OP switch, was under the impression I needed both. See I know nothing about electrical. I could however trade you cooking tips in return for helping me here. Hopeful to learn and grateful for you guys to teach me some. Here is the OP switch I got. Don't be afraid to tell me I messed up and I need different parts or less of them or whatever. My goal here is safety #1. Fun having #2.

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...11200/10002/-1

to answer your question. I just don't want to be on fire if I get in a wreck. So whatever is necessary to make it safe. Ill do whatever it is youd do in that regard. Also the OP switch doesn't show an amp rating on jegs website. Ill have to look at the switch itself to see if theres any indication on it. Heading over to look at that now. Its a 20 minute drive to the shop.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

I would use both the relay and the oil pressure switch because although the instructions for that OP switch show that it can switch a fuel pump, I don't know the current draw of the pump and the info for the OP switch doesn't give the amperage rating of it.

I also would want a collision shut-off switch as well. Here's the one I just ordered. It's cheap insurance. ($32.55 AUD or about $25.27 USD)

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

I intend to use both and i think an inertia switch is also a good idea i will get to a little later. Going to get the truck running properly first. So the relay kit i have is a 5 pin that utilizes 4 of them. 30 is main batt power(with circuit breaker between it and batt), 87 is fuel pump power, 86 to ignition switch, 85 is ground. 87a has no wire coming from it.

So as far as my tiny electrical brain can tell this should work per your diagram...I will start with connecting fuel pump and ground and check back to make sure this is correct with your thoughts before wiring oil pump switch.

I will run the wires along top of fire wall. Is this purple wire(solenoid wire?) then not needed? I would run a new wire to solenoid from OP switch?

So, if you're going to use the oil pressure switch, then 86 on the relay goes to the com on the OP switch. Then the N.O. on the OP switch goes to the ignition switch. The N.C. on the OP switch goes to the starter solenoid to run the fuel pump while starting the engine before the oil pressure triggers the OP switch.

The purple wire from the relay is not needed because you're using the OP switch. Just bundle it up and tuck it out of sight.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way . How about if we use the OP to kill the ignition and 86 on the fuel pump relay. OP goes low kills ignition and then fuel pump stops.

The collision switch can be wired in to the 30 wire to the fuel pump switch.

We could run The R terminal off the starter for ignition until we got oil pressure.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

I was just looking at the Holley oil pressure switch #12-810 and it handles the full load of the fuel pump with no need for a relay. I don't know what OP switch you have, chefk85. Maybe if yours could handle the pump amperage and then you wouldn't need a relay at all, making it a much easier installation.

VetteVet said "How about if we use the OP to kill the ignition and 86 on the fuel pump relay. OP goes low kills ignition and then fuel pump stops."

That's exactly what it does in my diagram in post #4.

I saw your diagram but I didn't see the ignition input to the OP switch just the output.
Apologies.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Okay. I posted a link to the oil pressure switch a few posts back but there is no info on amperage. Here is what it does say though.

Recommended for all electric fuel pump applications, this safety switch shuts off a fuel pump when oil pressure drops below 5 psi. It is designed for placement in the fuel pump's wiring circuit to eliminate current if the engine stalls or another major internal failure occurs.

Sounds like this is what it is designed for. So do we have a general consensus on how this should be done? I'll be working on it a little later this afternoon. I appreciate your guys helping me with this. It definitely shows the greatness of this forum. Let me know if that op info helps or what.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

The instructions for your oil pressure switch on Jegs web site shows the fuel pump wired directly to the switch with no relay. Give it a try an wire it as per their instructions.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

I've been told that the oil pressure switch will handle 5 amps and the Mighty Mite pumps should be protected with a 3 to 5 amp fuse. I can assume from this that the pumps draw less than 3 amps, so your setup should work fine without the relay.

That way, there's one less part in the system to cause problems.

Thank you so much. I'll get to it then. The ignition circuit is somewhat of an unknown to me but I'll look over the wiring diagrams here and see if it clears it up.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

So ive been studying this OP switch circuit and as stated I have little knowledge of this stuff. My question is why would the starter not turn over when the key is switched to the on position. Wouldn't that then close the NO circuit and allow power to the starter solenoid and turn the starter over? You had said the original purple starter solenoid wire is no longer needed right?

BTW the starter I have is one of those mini starters similar to this. Bahhh I hate this electrical stuff. I see they sell a diode kit for applications with vehicles originally equipped with points ignition. This starter was bolted up to the old 283 with HEI conversion. Wouldn't the POwner had to have installed one of these already if needed?

The starter will NOT turn over when the key is switched to the on position because the "on" position is connected to the normally open (NO) terminal on the OP switch.

When you turn the key to the start position (which is connected to the normally closed (NC) terminal on the OP switch) the fuel pump runs. When the oil pressure builds up to a point that activates the switch, then the NC opens and the NO closes and stays closed as long as the oil pressure is there.

If the engine stalls and you get out to pop the hood and leave the key on, the pump will not be running. That's the reason for the OP switch.

You could probably connect the NO terminal to the fuse panel if you have space. (Hot in "on" and "start", not on in ACC) If not, then connect to the ignition wire under the dash (pink I think, VetteVet would know) Then connect the NC terminal to the starter wire under the dash (purple I think)

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Hooking it up per your instructions. The purple wire that comes through the fuse block and down to the starter(originally) I will just route to the switch instead of running a new one and splicing in under the dash. Should save some work. Ill post some pictures of the final product and let you know how everything goes after i put oil in the engine and prime it.

Thanks again

NO. I said: The purple wire from the relay is not needed because you're using the OP switch.

The factory purple wire under the hood still has to go the starter. All I meant in my diagram where the wire is crossed-out between the OP switch and the starter, is that instead of running an extra wire to the starter (as it's usually hard to get at the starter) is to tap in under the dash.

I PMed you.

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

So to finish this up. With vettevets input and 67burbs call to me in the states we now have a working circuit. If you look at the diagram in post 20 I have it hooked up like that but instead of deleting the wire crossed out in the diagram I went ahead and did use it. Works perfectly! Thanks to vettevet and 67burb for helping me on this. This is why our board here is so great!
Now to start my alternator thread

Thanks again,
Kellen

Re: Wiring fuel pump circuit with Oil Pressure switch and relay questions

Also found this. Interesting write up. Should you even really use an oil pressure switch for fuel pump circuit? Or should you just run a crash/inertia switch and wire the pump more directly? At this point I'm confused on whats right and wrong haha and am looking for the best way to do this. I trust your guys knowledge and experience and if ive bought parts you've never used on your own vehicles then id rather just run it the way you would.
