Price on pulling a motor

Can someone give me a ballpark estimate on how much to pull a motor so it can get blasted and painted and then putting it back it? I neither have the skills or tools to do something like this.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

I can't help you on price for pulling and reinstall, but I would never blast an engine. Too many places where abrasives could get inside, no matter how well masked which would ruin the engine. Scraping with a putty knife, degreaser, wire brushes, solvents, detergent. all will be needed. When the engine is out, replace gaskets and seals. If it has some miles on it, you might want to change the timing chain and gears.

He's right. Abrasives under pressure get into many many places.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

Might want to specify type/year of engine/vehicle. Probably a big difference in price/labor between an early 60's small 6/manual trans/manual steering/non-AC and a late 90's big block,PS,PB,AC,fuel injection, computerized.

Way more than you're probably expecting to spend I'd gather.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

op might be referring to pressure washer 'blasting'.. or we hope

2wd or 4wd will make a big difference as well as manual or auto trans, SBC or BBC, a/c, p/s, etc. for labor times..

I've swapped SBC 2wd in about 5-6 hours drive in, swap everything over to a crate long block and drive out.. just r&r the engine probably 2-3 hours so not that big of a deal.. I swapped my first big block v8 olds when I was 16 in a junkyard with a sparse tool selection, drove it home the same day..

if I was nearby I'd be happy to do it for beer n pizza, good chance there's others around here that would as well..

either way, maybe try a WTB ad for a local member that may have a shop and willing to do it or take it into a local shop and ask the owner..

a place that's slow might be willing to help you out for a couple hundred but typical shop rates will probably put you north of 500 maybe even close to a thousand..

then you might just find you have both the skills and the tools [less cherry picker easily rented] it's easier than rebuilding a carburetor

good luck!

Re: Price on pulling a motor

I'm sorry but I mis-spoke. What I am wanting to do is pull the motor and then blast the engine bay. Sorry about that, my bad. Can I lift the cab off without pulling the motor?

Re: Price on pulling a motor

I called my mechanic and asked him what he would charge me, without looking at it said around $300 but he wanted to see it for a more accurate estimate. I called another mechinic and he said it would be just under 1k. He also said he could rebuild it too.
What's the price on a rebuild?

You need to provide more detail. What type of motor are you building, and what's your goal? Quite often it turns out a crate motor is a better deal than a rebuild.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

You got a lot of questions that you should be asking the machine shop, or garage that is pulling the engine.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

$300 bucks price for a shop seems low and might get you in to lots of cut corners on stuff . unless you realy trust the guy and know them good .

the 1k price is that remove and install ? and i would not reman a engine anymore unless you NEEDS #'s matching or cant find one as its such a odd ball combo . the brand new engine prices are so crazy low its cost per dollar over a reman job its a no brainier to buy new unless you want some specific stuff done or a crazy engine build .

Re: Price on pulling a motor

There are no numbers matching engines for these old heaps. All you would need if you were doing some sort of nut and bolt restoration is a matching date code. Even that is not that big of a deal.

Re: Price on pulling a motor

Where in Kansas are you? For the kind of money it's going to cost you to have someone else pull the motor you can buy or rent a cherry picker and pull it yourself. It costs more to rebuild a motor than it does to buy a plain jane crate motor ready to drop in. There are good used running motors to be had out there for cheap but you still need the means to retrieve it and swap it in. I'm 20 miles north of Hiawatha, Kansas, where are you?
