4x4 conversion??

Greetings all, Iam seeking some advice about a project Iam planning, I have a very solid, clean 70 Custom Camper 20 2wd, Iam wanting to convert it to 4x4 and have an 85 3/4 ton 4x4 frame and running gear, My question is would it be easier to convert the 70 frame to 4x4 (have a blazer complete 4x4 frame as well) or do a body swap onto the 85 frame? I have done many lwb to swb conversions on 2wd trucks, and am a welder by trade, your thoughts?? thanks

Re: 4x4 conversion??

It would depend on the condition of the frames of course but if it was me I would swap the 4x4 stuff onto the existing frame. Dieselwrencher has a nice write up in his build thread. He is converting a longhorn into a 4x4, this is the thread.

Re: 4x4 conversion??

The square body wheel base is about 4" longer than the 67-72. I think it would be easier to take the front spring mounts off the square body and use them on your 70 frame.

Re: 4x4 conversion??

If your 70 is a leaf spring rear the convert it.If it is a coil spring rear then the frame is different. You are welder you can take the blazer frame and the 70 frame and make one.To use the 85 requires a body lift and moving spring mounts to center the wheels this would be the harder route. You can do a search as this has been covered many times.

Re: 4x4 conversion??

You might be able to find a 72 4x4 with crappy body and good running gear. I bet you could pick that up for under $500, clean them up and swap your body and engine over...

diy4x.com (and our parts board) has spring hangers for you..
