I just installed new vortec 062 heads on a 327. I used the steel shim Felpro 1094 gaskets and coated them with copper cote. The block surface was original, no milling and the heads were the factory surface
That’s what my customer wanted.

Re: vortec swap

You can use any head gasket made for a small block with a 4" bore. Which one to choose will depend on what pistons are in your '74 block, how far down in the hole they are, what cam you are running and what you need your dynamic compression to be according to the fuel you want to run.

x2. Would now be a good time to discuss that optional thermostat bypass hole?

Re: vortec swap

I probably would but everyone else seems to say it is unnecessary if you are running a heater.

Any harm in drilling it anyway?

Re: vortec swap

I plan on drilling it even if I run a heater. I know a lot of yas didn't and its fine but I'm just gonna do it anyway. Its apart and the opportunity is there. Anyone think I'm crazy not to have these heads checked out, besides just new valve seals?

Re: vortec swap

I don't see any harm in drilling the hole. Just use a head gasket to locate it.

I would have them checked out at a machine shop unless you have a way to check the valve seat sealing yourself.

My machinist (who's also a good friend) says he has very rarely seen a set of Vortec heads that aren't cracked by the exhaust seat. That goes for both the 062 and 906 heads. I thought I had a good set of 906 heads, but they both turned out to have cracks in them.

Re: vortec swap

I second Truckster, rough guess is 9 out of 10 will be cracked. Most running on the road today are cracked, but they're still running! So do get them checked.

Re: vortec swap

that answers the gasket question. Thanks guys! I have this cam in my 350 right now
https://howardscams.com/i-24076037-h...-camshaft.html I have the 882 heads with an rpm intake and 650 carb. Will this cam work with the vortec heads im going to install? I will have them check for cracks and leaks. Found a guy near by that can do them. Also which intake would you buy for these heads? edelbrock performer or the rpm with the combo im running?

Re: vortec swap

That cam should work with stock L31 Vortec springs, but I would have the machine shop check the retainer to seal clearance. With a mild engine, the Performer would be fine, but there is nothing wrong with running the Performer RPM either. The Performer RPM has provisions to plumb coolant under the carb, which can be a benefit if you drive your truck in freezing weather.
