Torsion bar help
Hi all,
Some of you know my build and for those of you that don't, its a 1961 Apache, 1/2 ton 2wd. We are s till running the torsion front end in conjunction with a double adjustable Viking shock. The truck is lowered, and has a supercharged 6.0 with a 4L80E....Im sure the torsion setup was not designed for that much weight upfront. Anyway, after about 4500 miles, the torsion bars keep settling, it seems they are totally worn out or just cant handle the weight. It does however ride very good and handle well the way it is set up! Now the question.....I am assuming there is no source for new bars? Is there anyone that can modify the existing ones or build bars? If not I assume the next option would just to order the correct rate/weight spring for my front shocks and make it a coil over truck in the front.

Not sure which engine you had in as stock, but the early GMC with torsion bar's came with the V6, and those weigh about 900lbs.
May want to source a set of those as an upgrade.

My assumption that the weight of the Supercharged LS I guess is incorrect! It seems that the truck just keeps settling in the front quite often!

If you want to upgrade to 3/4 ton torsion bars I have two in the garage that I am not using. I converted my '62 3/4T from torsion to coil.

the 62 i had years ago the softer it got the lower you set the bars, and the firmer it got the more you cranked them up.
