Tilt steering 1966 C-10

What length is the correct inches to add a tilt steering in my 1966 C10 shortie big window? Who has the best price Jegs? Where do you measure to?

I have a 71/72 c10 tilt column, I think they are 32”.

CPP has some aftermarket copies that are pretty good I hear, go with Summit to buy tho

Don't forget, you get what you pay for. I'd be leary of cheap-o columns from China.

Different question but it's about steering. Can I slide my 65 column towards the dash and remount it? If not gonna look for 67-72 tilt column

The 65 column has a long one piece shaft so to answer your question, you would have to cut it and weld etc

I put my hands on those columns in their store, I'm concerned that they're cancel cam horn contacts are so long our horn buttons would no longer work. Looks like they're made for those adapters for 6 and 9 lug billet steering wheels. I could be wrong.

I was starting to put in power steering over the weekend. I had the same thought that Bentbolt had about moving the column closer to the dashboard. I was thinking 2-3 inches would be about right. I figured I was already going to have to cut the column shaft already, so why not try to slide the column in a bit. I didn’t really look at it enough to figure out if it was possible, and or I would have to cut down the actual column. I figured I probably would have to cut it and try to remove the 3 on the tree stuff. It’s all just a idea as of now. I’ll probably just end up with a after market column. I like how the original column looks and I have the stuff to rebuild the turn signal switch already

When I helped a friend determine what length column to use, we took a piece of p.v.c pipe the same diameter as the stock column and cinched it in, being sure it was correctly placed under the hood for the shifter linkage. Then we rigged up a way to mount the steering wheel in place by using a smaller pipe attached with p.v.c reducers and whatnot. Then he simply "got behind the wheel". We repeatedly shortened our rigged up column on the smaller diameter pipe in 1 inch increments until he was happy with it and then got an overall lmeasurement.

Mid 70's van column's work too. I was lucky to be at pick and pull for a 25% off weekend and picked up a good one for $28. Has a cruise control button too. It was in a van camper. I think it was a 78 year model.

I read an article sometime back re problems with poorly made imported aftermarket steering columns.
Don't take any shortcuts with steering, suspension or brakes. If you can't find an OEM unit that suits your needs stick with Ididit or Flaming River.
Expensive? Yes, but the peace of mind is worth every penny....

What was the correct length you came up with ??

I had bought a Chinese Import aftermarket Chrome Column..... NEVER EVER DO THAT. Mine broke internally, the universal joint in the tilt portion is Cheap garbage Plastic. it disintegrated before i even had the truck on the road. I ended up fininding a 72 Van Column at the swap meet. If your going to buy aftermarket buy flaming river or IDIDIT. only ones i would trust.

Not sure, but what worked for him may not work for you. That's why I posted that trick. Anyone who tries it will find it useful with regard to their specific seat, steering wheel and body size.

I mentioned before I used a tilt from a van. Funny thing is I never tilt it.
