Underbed fuel tank from early Blue Oval car

Recently I saw a thread of an underbed fuel tank, that was from a sixties Blue Oval car, that a member posted. He snagged the tank from his wife's project. I can not find the thread or pictures after searching pages of threads. Can someone get me headed in the right direction?

I remember it too. but can't find it as well, the tank was either an early 60's falcon, or the 64-5 mustang (basically the same car) and it fit snug in the rear rails, and didn't hang down very far...

My 64 currently has a mid-60's early-70's F**d tank in it. It seems to fit well but I'm yanking it in favor of a Blazer tank. I'll look & see if I have any decent pics of it when I get on the home computer.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but this is a mod I would like to do to my truck. I was wondering if anyone had a good solution to making the sending unit work, being that the Ford sendin unit is different ohm than the Chevy gauge?

I think you can get sending units for the 64-5 mustang tank that are re-calibrated for gm cars, they are a common swap for custm projects.

I've got the same issue with the underbed tank that came on my '46 Chevy truck. I've got one (bad) picture of it I'll try to post here.

I have no idea if my tank is from an early Mustang or what. How can I tell? Is anyone familiar with their look, dimensions?

And most of all, where would you get one of these sending units modified for use with a GM? I bought a new aftermarket (off brand, somewhat cheap) gauge set for my truck and can't get the gas guage working cause its got the 5 bolt GM type sender but the tank is the Ford type ring mount sender.

Jon, thanks for the link. Nothing in there I didn't already know though. Rather than go through all the trouble of developing an electrical adapter, why not a physical ring you could fit on the Ford tank that allows bolting up of the typical GM five bolt type sensor? I'm ssure it must not be that easy or guys that are a lot better fabricators than would have done it already.

yes I dont see why it couldnt be fabbed up, and with a brand new tank (they are pretty cheap) you could cut and weld without danger.

A trick my dad used to do was use a fuel gauge from the car the tank came out of, and then he just had it sit under the dash, and pulled it out when he wanted to see what it showed...

It's been raining like hell most of the week but when I can, I will get out there and study on this idea and see if there's a doable fix.

It strikes me that all the farting around for an adapter probably isn't worth it. Maybe the direct method is the way to go: Just use my jig saw to cut out the Ford sender unit mounting location and patch in a piece of sheet metal; then start over.

I could get a junkyard GM tank, cut out the part of the tank where the mount is and transfer it to the Ford tank. OR I could just make the right sized circular hole in the tank, then make an additional circular sheet metal layer for where the five screw holes for the GM sender would go through it.

Of course, I'd do all this with the tank pulled, washed and filled with water. Then afterward, use someone's tank sealant to coat the entire inside. Whaddaya think?

CAN'T thank you enough. Assuming the price is remotely reasonable, you just saved me a hell of a lot of work! I'll be giving them a call on Monday to check it out. I'll post the answer.
