Re: Np205

Is the nv4500 a dodge or chevy version? Dodge version will require a dodge 29 spline np205 from a 89-93 cummins+getrag. The chevy nv4500 will require a dodge bell housing and a dodge input shaft, and I think a 32 spline chevy np205 will bolt up to it.

Re: Np205

You'll need the late 205 32 spline/round pattern,as mentioned,if it's a GM NV4500.Going all Dodge is the east button.

-not to mention the Dodge NV is the stouter of the two since they used the HD version by using a stouter main shaft and retainer nut that eliminated the 5 gear failure issues. go with the 32 spline output shaft and you can bolt a round pattern 205 up directly to the tailshaft eliminating the need for a female coupler.

You mean the chevy version doesn't have the 5th gear nut problem, the dodge one does.

Re: Np205

Thanks for all the feed back guys I'm just trying to figure out the cheapest way. Idk if buying the adapter to mate the 12v to my sm465 or make the guy a deal on the motor and tranny but since my t case won't work and i don't know where to get a passenger side drop t case for the tranny I'm in a pickle

Re: Np205

The easiest thing IMO would be just to find a NV4500 from a 94-02 dodge, then find a NP205 from a 5 speed first gen dodge 89-93. It'll be right, and the cheapest route. The engine plates and flywheels and clutches are easy to find and they're a lot of options to go.

Well for now I think I'll buy the motor and save up for the tranny and t case. Does anyone know how far back I have to box the frame in?

Re: Np205

i bought a 94 donor with the cummins and 4500 but it was 2wd. i converted it to 4wd by changing out the mainshaft and the 4x4 housing. then i found a 29 spline 205 from an 89-93 cummins/getrag combo with the coupler. i think that this was the easiest route to take but most likely the most expensive, especially if you gather all of these parts separately. the motor will usually be around 1500 for a running motor, a good nv4500 can probably be found for between 1200 and 1000 and the 205 can be anywhere from 400 for decent used to 1000 for a rebuilt case. you will have at least 3000 in the drive train if you part it all together.

i paid 1800 for my donor truck, 500 for my 29 spline 205, about 500 for the 4500 mainshaft, rebuild kit, and 4x4 housing and coupler; and all of this isnt including fluids, the clutch, bellhousing and shifter if not on trans, slave cylinder, and rebuild kit for the 205. People are not joking when they say that these conversions can get expensive quick! Like others have said, not trying to scare you out of it, just beware that they can and do get very expensive.

quad 4x4 suggested that when running the 205 with a 4500 to use a double lip and double spring input seal on the 205 and to put a thread sealer on the bolts that fasten the stock adapter over the input shaft of the 205. he said to run about 1 extra quart of fluid in the 4500 to compensate for the added capacity by not using the seal over the coupler unless you wanted to run that liquid gold in the transfer case as well!!!

dieselwrencher seems to know what he is talking about and i have researched the hell out of the drive train options for a conversion and gathered both wrong and right parts and this seems to be the easiest route of them all. it might not be the cheapest but it is probably the strongest and easiest setup if locating all the parts separately.

Re: Np205

Ok, here is another option. If you can't find a NV4500 cheap enough to get done what you want, start out with a Getrag 360. It came from the 89-93 Dodges. Or just find a 2wd NV4500 and don't worry about the 4wd working until you save enough money up to complete the project.

Re: Np205

On boxing the frame, it depends what your plans are with the truck. On a pulling truck, I try to go as close to the trans cross member as I can get, and box it all the way back. For your project, I'd think boxing it in between the crossmembers would be fine. (From trans cross member to the cross member before the rear axle) These frames, 67-72, are strong enough you really don't have to box them for a daily driver or a mild tow vehicle.

I believe the steering gear is what they're trying to protect on the front - these trucks like to yank the bolts right out of the frame in that area.

I would recommend a little research and a lot of re-enforcement in that particular area.

Yeah I've heard of the frames cracking at the power steering box. So it's a good idea to put a plate there.

I think advanced adapters make them? Or find one from a 4bt bread truck. Also read this: http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?p=88284

This one might work, im not sure. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cummi...Q5fAccessories

You are trying to play a fairly expensive game.
