Re: Data plate

My trucks of this era have spot welded tags. I think gently removing it with a putty knife, preserving the look of the plate. After the cab is blasted, use JB Weld to reattach the plate.

I admit to not being too savvy, sure others here will have a better opinion.

Good luck with your project.

Re: Data plate

What about the paint code plate? It has those weird looking fasteners.

Re: Data plate

Their are a few places that sell those special rivets. I have seen them for sale, can not remember where exactly, try eBay, LMC, Tucker’s, Classic, etcetera.

Re: Data plate

I would not remove the VIN tag. That is actually a Federal crime to remove a VIN tag from a Vehicle. Just cover it with 1 layer of good masking tape and then a couple layers of good duct tape and it will be fine.

I'm all for keeping the laws but...
Seriously?
So the cops are going to show up at my house if I drill the vin tag rivets out on a 50+ year old truck?

Maybe I should not have taken that tag off my mattress.

Re: Data plate

That's not quite what I'm saying.

If he removes the tag and someone happens to see it when it is at the blasters and decides to be an asshat. Some people are like that.

Also if at some time the truck needs to have a VIN inspection. The inspector might notice.

Here in Idaho, of the state vehicle inspector suspects that something may not be right about the VIN or the vehicle in general, they can confiscate it and it could be crushed.

Re: Data plate

Federal law says the VIN tag, and some states state the body tag can't be removed. Doing so damages the authenticity of the vehicle, and may break the law.
Do what you want. Have fun later.

Re: Data plate

Don't remove it, it's not worth the potential hassle it could become. Just have it masked appropriately so it doesn't get blasted.

Re: Data plate

Sorry guys, I was only trying to be funny, and I'm not really trying to cause trouble. I just was stating my opinion in a humorous way.

I totally agree with the captain that some people just like to be mean old donkeys and will turn you in for something in which you had no criminal intent.

I would absolutely say leave your vin tag alone if at all possible.
But for me in the case of sand blasting your truck, it just seems to me that you would want to blast every possible inch of your cab to prevent rust or problems of peeling paint. (Just my opinion)

By the way, I have never tampered with or removed a vin on any truck or car.
All my trucks are legit!

And I will try to be more careful with my humor in the future.
