Offset and backspacing for wheels

I’m wondering if there is a known range of offset and backspacing that works for the 67-72 C10’s? In particular...the ‘67. I know that wheel diameter makes a difference. And height. I’m looking at 20 and 22’s. Leaning towards 22’s.

Is there a guide that exists? I did a search. Came up empty.

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

Offset and backspacing are two different things.
Offset is the distance (positive or negative) from the center of a wheel.

Backspacing is the distance from the wheel mounting surface to the inside edge of the rim.
Backspacing is directly related to the width of the wheel also.
There is no given size with all the Varibles of these old trucks.
What year rearend? (Because there are different widths)
Is it lowered?
How much?

Measure your own truck.

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

Yep. I understand the differences. Mine is a ‘67. Which I think has a slightly narrower rear end. I know the question I asked has a lot of “it depends” variables to it. But for some popular vehicles of the past, there is a general guide on what works. I’ll try to measure to be sure. But wheels...so many options! Just seeing if there is a general range that is known to probably work (measure before buying!) to help me narrow it down.

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

Stepside or fleetside?

Within certain parameters, zero offset works best for these trucks. That’s 4” backspace on an 7” wheel, 4.5” on an 8” wheel and 5” on a 9” wheel.

I have 17x8 with 4.5” bs on the front of my 69 short step and I have 5” bs 17x9” on the rear. But I did the ECE 5 lug disc conversion and have a wider 71-72 rear which was needed to better make room in the wheel well for the 275 55 17 tire. I’m running 235 55 17 in the front.

Your truck, but 22’s look absolutely absurd on a 67-72 IMO. I’d look at a LOT of pics before doing that...

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

I’m running 20x10s with 275/40/20 on the rear of a 1972 jimmy with a 5 inch backspace with zero problems rubbing. It’s lowered 4/6 with adjustable panhard bar. The fronts are 20x8.5 245/45/20 with a 5.25 backspace no rubbing lock to lock. Hope this helps

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

My '67 has OEM wheelwells/bedside lips, sits on a '67 frame, but with '71-72 5-lug axle. ECE 6" rear coils, Super-Track bar, shock relocator bracket setup

------Had a 1" billet spacer installed during these fitment measurements, so subtract accordingly-------

Mickey Thomson 305/35-20 tires : https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mtt-6228/overview/

Foose "Legend" series 20x10 wheels : https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...7355/overview/

These fit with juuuuust a little wiggle room on the inside/outside (factoring out the billet spacer). The tire and wheel lip profile were nicely contoured "in line" with the OEM wheel lips, a very important style point for my eyes. Same tires I'll probably be running this Spring, but with a painted steel wheel/poverty cap. I still want the thing to look tough.

This is the best guide for wheel fitment you can find. If you have access to the truck just measure what you need and order appropriately instead of gambling with random info you find online. There are tons of guides out there if you don't know how to measure for wheel fitment.

These trucks are 50 years old and had several different length axles, plus the newer axle is a popular swap to get a 5 lug bolt pattern, so even if you find info for a stock truck there's a very good chance your parts have been swapped over the years. Since wheels can be a large investment, it doesn't make sense not to measure it yourself.

In addition to the tape measure... here are two tools I used. There are a lot of variables.

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

I'm running a 20x11 front, and a 20x12 rear on mine. Rears have plenty of clearance. I do have wider wheel wells in the rear, but I don't think they'd be needed honestly.

In the fronts I'm running 6.75"bs, the rears are 7.75"bs. I did have interference in the front on the shock mounts on the lower control arms. To get no interference without modifying the suspension you'd want to run 20x10 fronts, or bring the wheel out another 1/4-1/2", but then you'd be getting very close to the fender.

Also note that 20x11 fronts interfere with the sway bar on some aftermarket suspension, so modifications will need to be made. 20x10 would be safe though.

Here is how 20" look with 315 tires on a 72. I agree that 22" with rubber-band tires isn't going to look great, but appearance is subjective, so if that's your style go for it. With 22" you may not have clearance issues like I did at the 11" width.:

Re: Offset and backspacing for wheels

I am wondering about something.

Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, etc wheels takeoffs are available cheap on Craigslist and Facebook market. They have a huge offset and a flat face. So they may need a spacer to prevent rubbing. They are 5x5 lug pattern.

-Is anyone running 17-18" jeep rims?
-Is anyone 3D printing a replacement center cap to delete the Jeep center?
-On the subject of looks - Will the "flat" face make them look out of place on an old truck?

I am just curious as it is a way to get an 17-18" rim cheap, but I haven't seen it mentioned.

PS> I am old, and can't handle the ride of a 20" rubber band set up, but would like to move up a couple of rim sizes.
