do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

do i undercoat my cab or just paint it? i was planning to put a real thin coat of undercoating and then paint it balack. or i might just paint hugger orange to match the truck. i dont want it to look like i am hiding anything cause it is an almost rust free cab with factory rockers and floor boards

Re: do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

I went with Por 15 on the bottom my build . I'm on the Eastcoast but brought my build back from California , its really tough to find rust free trucks around here .
I don't think I would use under coat , I have seen guys use the spray in bed liner like xline ... rhino liner is crap IMO .
Looks great buddy !

Re: do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

I just stripped one of my rustfree cabs to bare metal last month.I used two coats of Rustoleum Rust Stop primer and two coats of satin black Rustoleum.I'm not sure what color the truck will be and don't care if it matches since you never see it.I guess spray-on liner is good, but it scares me like undercoat and powder coat.If and when anything gets behind it,there it stays and eats.Paint crumbs off as the chip/scratch grows. Those other coatings are like a shell and I've seen worse damage because of those than without.

under coat because paint is not that strong up against rocks and sand and mud.trucks from the factory are under coated for a reason

I have done it both ways. If its a driver> undercoat. If its a show truck> paint. (And dont hit any rocks or gravel).

The one I just did is for a 2wd street driver.it'll see miles but an easy life compared to a stone tossin' 4wd.I still may hit it with the Duplicolor spray on liner.

They have tintable undercoating as well...lizard skin I think?. I plan on epoxy primer and Raptor bed liner.

Re: do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

I have the same issue right now. I was thinking about getting my buddy to spray Rhino on it because the primer he uses in unreal and I have had him spray stuff and cant find a way to get it off. The only other issue is that it will not match my frame. The local Car quest here told me to use farm implement paint which is just single stage no hardner. He said it is the same thing as chasis black.

Re: do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

I would never undercoat anything again, my Nova is done and I had a tranny case get blown open and that tranny fliud turned the undercoating to tar or something along those lines.
I would use bedliner or the POR 15 .
Maybe with paint on it then it might not be effected by fluids but without it sure will.

Re: do i undercoat my cab or just paint it?

69gwc i think that happened because most factory style undercoating is rubberized. Its better then nothing but i like more of the modern kind or spray on bed liner.
