Adding a Tachometer?

It looks like buying factor tachometer and a tach cable will not be enough parts to make it work in my dashboard. Is this true? I'm not going to pay $300 plus for a conversion kit. Is there a good one to use on my steering column? Can I install one in the dash? Does anyone have a good approach?

Ok...lets figure this out.
You are paying $300 for a 'conversion kit'?....from who?
What all are you buying?...do you have a list or a picture?
To convert to a factory tach 'system', you will need all the following:
-A (factory tach) main black face plate (...not the front bezel, the metal piece in behind the bezel)
-A (factory tach) inner/back plate (...this is the backing plate the holds and supports all of the gauges, including the new tach)
-A (factory tach) printed circuit (...this is different and larger than the deluxe gauge printed circuit)
-A (factory tach) wiring harness (...this is the easiest piece to 'work around' in case you don't have one)
So which (or all) of these do you have?

Search is your friend. There was a recent thread showing exactly how to do this. You can do it in your current housing with your current PCB if you're willing to run 2 wires.

Just google for "site:67-72chevytrucks.com tachometer wire" and the top two hits will likely cover it, but search.

I have an autometer tach mounted on my steering column. its about the same size as the original, and I centered it so it blocks no gauges.

you can get autometers lower end gauges (think they are called autogage) for like 50-60 bucks
