M1009 update
The starter was screeching like a banshee, so I bought some shims. Turned out one starter bolt was broken off in the block. I took the starter off and the front drive-shaft for room to work. I got a drill in there with a good sharp drill bit, the ez-out lived up to it's name. Got the starter reinstalled with the one old and one new starter bolt, now the 6.2 busts off smooth and quiet.
This thing runs like a top and has plenty of new parts on it. The radiator shroud has chalk marks that show last service 9/9/09 so I'm thinking it may have been in service up until that one starter bolt broke. My lucky break. Too bad they didn't try to fix it, or I should say I'm glad they didn't try.

Great News!
The broken starter bolt is a common problem. Good to hear you got it out easily. I bought two news ones on eBay just in case. Is the support bracket still there for the starter? Curious - if it was missing is why it broke...

The support bracket on the nose was intact. But the tip broke off while trying to remove it. So that bolt needs to be replaced soon. I'm guessing they just got a little loose and one snapped off. I sure was happy to see that extractor bring the threaded piece of bolt out of the block.

Just throwin this out there from somebody that has "serviced" a government vehicle a time or two--go ahead and change that fuel filter, pcv valve, and well, everything else. Just sayin

After you put on the big rubber, "Tonka" might fit. Or in reference to the engine, "Lt 6.2". Rat Patrol? Or how about "made in America"?
