69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

So I bought system off of a 69. It is different than the 72 systems I have.

The mounting bracket on the front is shorter and the back brackets mount under the motor mount.

Is this correct?

Also ,the reservoir mounts to the fender well on a bulging section and not up by the windshield washer bottle.

What are the differences on these 68-72 systems?

Mel? An expert on this stuff for sure!!

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

I didn't know there were any differences in these years. 68-69 sometimes had a can extension for the reservoir. Maybe a tall deck setup is different?

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

Ya, I hadn't seen this style before. It was in a 69 pick up (I think half ton) and I checked the trim tag in the glove box and it listed the 396 engine. It has a small block in it but had the BB towers, BB motor mounts, big block fan shroud and this power steering system on it.

here are some pics.

Pick shows two of the rear brackets but only one was on it. The other bracket was in the bed of a truck sitting next to it.

Those brackets don't look correct to me. I know in 1968 like this truck, the resivoir was mounted on an arm (red arrow) but the other two bracket are just like all other 68-72 brackets (green arrows)

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

My 69 396 has a long Brackett on the PS pump, and it was mounted directly to the fender like my 72.
Maybe someone used a small block Brackett for the BB pump?

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

thanks for the info guys.

I guess I need to get my 72 system and compare the two front brackets and see if they will interchange.

The back bracket mounts under the motor mount under it next to the engine. I will have to clean them and see if there are any #s on them.

The mount of the reservoir makes sense to me. Maybe they ran out of brackets and improvised. Or maybe the owner changed the location. I will take pics of the truck Saturday when I go back out to the yard.

I have never seen the back bracket like this before. I don't think it is small block.
Need more input and more examples.

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

Nice pic Custom. Thanks.

So any thoughts here? Maybe they are some kind so small block brackets?

I have searched and can find no match for the one for the back that goes under the motor mount. I did find a pic of a 68 nova that had a similar one but not the same.

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

The pump, hoses and reservoir are correct big block, the mounting bracket on the pump and your two loose adjuster brackets are 67/68 small block.
The first pic is of a 67/68 set and the second picture is the correct Big block set..

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

Livrat, you have solved my mystery!! Thanks!

I thought they must be some kind of small block but for some reason I could not find any pictures for the small block setup. Is the rear small block bracket exclusive to the small block truck?

Thanks again to all who help with this!

Re: 69 Big Block power steering system Questions!!

I do not think that was exclusive to just the truck, I do believe the passenger cars also used the same small block PS pump and brackets

Hi Tim, pm returned and it looks like Mark got ya figured out already. All I can add is that this type of SB ps pump brackets were for the smaller balancers found on the earlier 283, 307 & 327's, they were also used on the 68 and prior SWP cars with the 6" balancer. Mel

Dumb question and rookie mistake.....
The beefy bracket for PS pump, whAt size are the bolts? Seems like the should be 3/8-16 and about 1-1-1/2" but that presentation the lower 2 holes. What is the right size? Or has some body broken it and tapped it to the next size. Any idea what goes here?

They come up from time to time on the parts board. You can do a search in there, or become a premium member and you can post a WTB add.
