Re: values of our trucks on the increase

Watching craigslist and hanging out with my truck club I've seen the price of square bodies double in my area in the last 5 years. You used to be able to pick up a clean later model truck (81-87) for 3-4K (the 73-80's in nice condition were usually a couple grand higher). That same truck now has an asking price of 7-8K. I'm talking clean original trucks, no mods.

At the same time, I've noticed the 67-72 C10s haven't gone down in price, but the ones for sale aren't selling quite as fast as they had been. I think the squares are starting to get so popular *some* people are looking past the more $ 67-72's and picking up a nice 73-87.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

I agree the value of older well built/kept trucks is rising but think Forbes totally missed out by not including the 67-72 series. That era trucks started the truck use / second car stand in use with factory a/c, tilt, comfortable seats and or buckets with console, power brakes, power steering, cruise, great styling, etc. The list goes on.

I see a LOT of the 67-72 trucks & Blazers at BJ auctions, Russo & Steele, Mecum, etc. pulling in large amounts of $$ when the hammer falls. Don't recall seeing the squares crossing the auction block in same amounts or similar amounts of $$. Just my thoughts.

67-72 is about at its peak. If you’re an investor it’s probably best to sell now for top dollar before the 73-87’s take over.

I've been kinda thinking/seeing the same thing. The squares are clearly the "next big thing" in trucks. The possibilities are endless, there's even factory crew cabs. And there were SO MANY of them made.

The 67-72's have had one hell of a run. They've been king of the classic truck hill for 15-ish years now? Just about everything that can be done to them has been done and people's attention is starting to shift. I don't see them sinking away into oblivion, but they're going to have to start sharing the spotlight.

I'm not sure I agree, but that would be a good thing for those of us who would like to pick up more of them.

The biggest drawback for 73 and newer has to be emissions, at least here in CA.

Nothing lasts forever, it’s not like they will just keep going up and up. I’ve been looking at mid year vettes and muscle cars for years now. Although they are pricey, they haven’t really changed that much in the last few years. These trucks will do the same, just as any other classic/collectible.

The junkyards here are FULL of square body trucks. I’m starting to pull stuff off of them now too. I just pulled a grille guard and a full set of 15x8 six lug steelies off this 84 cucv Blazer. Paid less than $100 for all of it.

I've been following first gen birds and camaros as well and have seen the same. Aside from the rare models, most of the really nice cars are staying in that 25-30K range, 35K if the car is really nice. I've even seen some low 20's recently for some nice ready to drive cars. It also seems the price on a lot of 40s/50's stuff has come down quite a bit, even on tri-fives. Again, a super nice car is going to bring high $, but they don't seem as out of reach as they used to be.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

I remember when these trucks were pretty much free . Ive gotten many in the late 90s and 00s, usually hearing "you tow it you could have it". Scrap was only like 30 a ton so would usually cost someone money to junk them. I've owned like 6 squares and the most i ever paid was 1200 bucks and I thought that was a lot at the time but I really needed a new vehicle.

Been casually looking for another squarebody for the wife but prices are insane in my area, prices are a little more reasonable down south but the shipping ain't cheap

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

I think the appeal of the 73-87 trucks are in the age of the buyers. If you are like me, when you were young your dad owned a 73-87 and drove you around in it for years. Now that you (like me) are at an age where you have a good job, *some* dispensable income, and fond memories of the 73-87 era trucks, that's what you are after. I know that the appeal for 67-72 has been quite high, but for me I've never really been as big a fan, and it is probably for the reasons I say above. When I'm nice and old, I would expect that the 90's era to have a boom, since the people born in the late 80's and 90's will be the right age with the same memories.

Just my pure speculation.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

I definitely agree on the '67-72's starting to hit their limit on value...and perhaps maybe in for a bit of downturn noting that the people interested in buying them for the better part....already have them.

I could see an uptick in the 60-66's coming and definitely a lot of room to go up on the square body styles.

That said, I've always like the square bodies...except for that damn fender rust that you see on almost every one of them.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

The prices of the 67/72's has gone nuts.

There are still good buys out there. A guy priced me a restored 71 SWB yesterday for $10,000. It needs a seat and dash cluster to finish. I've not seen the "restoration" so who knows.

The general prices of 67/72's is out of control. I didn't get in these trucks to make money anyway so it really doesn't make me any difference.

I am seeing more and more nice square bodies around here.

I can't believe the 88 up trucks haven't taken off sooner. I am beginning to see a nice one now and then.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

A lot of guys forget its not the 'asking price' that counts....its the selling price.
Simple supply and demand arrangement.

I find these trucks in really great, original driveable condition all day long for the $8-$12k range....and these are nice trucks.
On top of that there are a lot of decent trucks in the $6-$8k range that are worth buying in order to enter the market with a nice driver.

In my opinion, the guys asking $35k.....aren't going to find much action from the public most of the time.....which is sort of odd when they put it on craigslist to sell it.
They will have to be patient....because it might take 6 months to a year to sell and the truck will need to be expertly marketed and they will have to find the one or two buyers out there willing to buy for that price at that time.

My two bits...

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

You guys ever watch the museum auctions on TV, lots of classics? Sure our trucks are pushing 60Kish for perfect, but some of the classics are fetching in the hundreds. Last night I saw a Boss Mustang sell for 350-370K. 8K miles on that car, even the tires were original.

The auction scene has driven up prices on everything automotive. I'm ok with the 67-72 prices leveling off or coming down. I bought my truck to keep, not flip.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

I divested from all collector cars and trucks for now. It was nice for the portfolio as a hedge against inflation and possible market risks. Bought and sold a bunch in the past 20 years.

The market for 67-72 trucks started to wane a couple years ago. The parts are doing the same thing. Not as much demand as just 2 years ago. The Tri-5 Chevys have flattened and actually dropped in value about 10%. 1st gen Camaros and firebirds have shown the same propensity.

Someone mentioned the Boss Stangs, etc. Yeah, $100,000 would get you a concours restored Boss 429 12 years ago. Now they are pushing $250K. I bought a Land Rover D90 in 2004 for $22,000 and sold it 2 years later for $20,000. Now you can't find one for much lass than $50,000.

Gotta go with the trends.

Re: values of our trucks on the increase

Figured i'd maybe bump this back up...

Im seeing a drastic difference being about 2 years removed from owning my last square. Ive got 8k to spend and i haven't even found a single truck to go look at yet.

Don't have a ton on my wishlist:
-prefer swb c10/r10 or maybe a k10
- minimal rust and halfway presentable paint.
-Would love a 2 tone.

Im just not even seeing much inventory out there... Is that everyone else's experiences lately?
