Re: Another LSx/4L60e Swap

No issues really, something in my head just wanted to use the sending unit that was correct for the truck, so I drilled and tapped the bypass and put it there. The factory wire was just long enough to reach down there.

The optical sensor should be the same one they used for years. It reads the pulses and buffers the signal for the VSS. There are two black marks on the back of the speedometer head, and that breaks the light reflection and counts as a pulse. IIRC, it is 1000 revoultions per mile x 2 pulses per revoultion = 2000PPM. The 90-91 electronic cluseters function with 4000 PPM.

so is it basically for the cruise to function? or does the computer use it for the engine controls also?

Yup, it's 2-1/8" that I found at (ok, I'm ashamed...) Harbor Frieght for $20. I wasnt going to put one in, but my son talked me into it. Works just fine though...

Ummm sorry, but you are wrong.

The electric speedo we use for these swaps come from a 90-91 Blazer, Suburban or dually. They are true electric speedometers, and only require the one signal output from the PCM ran to the cluster. You must re-pin the cluster connector, but there is NO speedo cable.

Just look at the back of the speedo yand you will see the cable fitting.

Look at the back of my cluster and you will see no cable fitting

Edit - Corrected the date.

Well you learn something new every day!

It also controls TCC and charcoal canister purge valve, and probably a few other things I can't remember off hand.

The goodmark fenders fit as well as their hoods. I used them on my '73, and they worked great.

The d/s dropped right in but the p/s was a real bear to get lined up. Both are much thinner than original, though. There was just too much rust in my originals to warrant saving them.

I really like the way you have the factory air cleaner installed!!! Is it mounted to the battery box? Does it line up with cut-outs in the fender? And you just used a D/S Battery box?

Yup, mounts flat on the battery tray. I had to trim the vertical piece of the tray, then lined it up with the p/s fender and drilled three holes - two for the mounting 'feet' and one fairly large hole for the drain. Even used the factory plastic push-pins to mount it. You do have to stretch the inlet hose a little, but it works. I have not cut the inner fender for the inlet yet. The fender still has to come off for paint and I'll do it then. I ordered an auxilary battery mount/tray from LMC to mount the battery on the d/s. It works out perfect for the wire harness since the battery cables are designed for that side of the truck, anyway.

I'll see what I can do about a parts list, but it's pretty much a rip-off of project "Fred", just at a much slower pace.

This is what I want my engine bay to look like! From the outside looks like a normal 1979 Sierra.......... Lift the hood and looks like a 2003 Sierra........ Looks Great! If you have any pics of the air cleaner install I would love to see them........ Thanks

Re: Another LSx/4L60e Swap

Whoa! Bumped back to page three already! I have not spent too much attention on the truck due to work and school lately. Also is not much fun in the garage when it's flippin' 20 degrees. Regardless, I managed to get the Vintage Air kit finished and the power doors wired up and tested.

Here is the interior AC unit:

Re: Another LSx/4L60e Swap

I found the crossover harness at a pick-and-pull in Tucson a while back and used a schematic to strip out the un-needed wires (2nd pic). Still amazes me that I can use a 1990 harness and 1985 doors on a 1976 truck. Thanks GM! The power windows worked great right off the bat, but the locks were a different story. I troubleshot for a few hours and became frustrated and quit to break out the laptop. Found a post where it was mentioned that the relay has to be grounded. Doh! Grounded it and it worked fine!

Thanks - it was pretty easy to install, but a little pricey... The original unit was toast... We'll see if it works...
