That dowel pin will work out and fall into the gears inside the timing cover and most often breaks something in there it is actually referred to by many as the Killer Dowel Pin or KDP. I just did it as a precaution they sell a kit for $60 to do just what I did I made mine for about 15 minutes of time

Sorry thought I put that in one of my big long post but must of forgot it. I used the factory Cummins Power Steering pump then hooked the Chevrolet Pressure line to it same fitting screwed right together. The Chevrolet Pump has 2 return ports and the Cummins only had 1 so I put a T in the Line with one side going to the return port on the pump, one side going to the hydraboost return and the last port going to the steering sector return. It seems to work fine this way I was worried at first but it works great.

It's to align the gear housing to the cylinder block during assembly to ensure everything is square to keep timing right.

I though it was something like that, thanks. You'd think that they would have designed it so the dowel pin couldn't fall out.

I think it is supposed to be tight enough it does not come out but the vibration of the motor works it out over time

oh that makes sense. The reason I asked is because I'm looking at getting a dodge cummins, but I don't know if I want to do all of the work to do a swap on a chevy, so I might just get a dodge.

Re: "Brown Truck" 1984 K30 Crew Cab

Now with everything running it and installed it was time for some driveshafts I measured them up swapped the yokes on the new 205 transfercase with the ones off of the old 205 transfer case and then had a shop shorten the rear drive drive shaft in front of the carrier bearing and lengthen the front drive shaft each had to be done about 3 inches. I just measured them and gave the shop the measurements and where I had measured each one. I then mounted up the transmission tunnel I had to cut new holes for the transmission shifter and the transfercase shifter. The transmission moved back 3 1/2 inches and the transfercase moved to the right about 4 inches it is actually on the curve of the tunnel I cut the new holes and got the tunnell back in place then covered the old holes with some diamond plate aluminum I put the Chevrolet boots back on with some modification but am not satisfied with them. Once I got my back and installed I started drivng the truck some. This was about the middle of July. At this time I did not cahnge any rear end Ratio it was still the 4:56 gears and I stuck the dodge down pipe and abotu 6 ft of pipe on it for an exhaust I was needing the truck back and knew with work it would be 2 months plus before I got to work on it again.

I liked it as long as you did not want the radio on or to talk to some one it dumped right behind the transfercase.

Plus, if you have it turned up at all, that will make a mess of the under carriage.

Re: "Brown Truck" 1984 K30 Crew Cab

I ran it for about a month and a half like that it had plenty of soot under the bed. I am now running a 3 inch straight pipe from the turbo all the way behind the tires and turn it out there. I was not going to put a tip on it but the guy that did my exhaust did not get it out far enough so I am going to put a 3 inch bow tie shaped tip on it to get it out past the bed a few inches.

Re: "Brown Truck" 1984 K30 Crew Cab

Well the last post will bring us up to about September I started driving the truck in July. In the middle of September after hauling about 6 or 7 tractors to town I had went home and loaded the last tractor. The next morning on the way to town I was running along on the highway and all of a sudden the truck just quit pulling. I did panic a little bit at first then down shifted to 4th and everything was fine. I knew exactly what had happened the nut had come loose on the overdirve and allowed the gear to slide back. I had to drive it for about a week with no overdrive 55mph tops. It is no big deal to fix this issue takes about 3 hours. I had to drop the transfercase and pull the aluminum housing off of the rear of the transmission. Mine already had an aftermarket nut there are several "solutions" to the nut coming loose I think the person that had installed the aftermarket nut had not used any lock tight so I lock tighted it really good and let that dry over night, put it al back together and all was fine again.

Your truck looks great. Have you checked to see if you can get your hinges to go down on the fire wall at all yet?

Re: "Brown Truck" 1984 K30 Crew Cab

No I did not I adjusted them on the hood side guess that is the only place I ever adjusted hood springs will have to check into that thanks for the tip I adjusted the latch and put a new latch on it. With the air to air in the front of the radiator I can not run the safety latch.

I was able to retain the stock hood latch on my brother's 84 K20, but I can't remember how I did it. It's been a while. Here's the thread on it. About 3/4's the way to the bottom of page one there are pictures of the intercooler install.

Re: "Brown Truck" 1984 K30 Crew Cab

So you kept the factory safety latch and the cable latch. My safety latch would hit the top of the intercooler so I just took it off never had a hood come unlatched but suppose it is possible.

Has any body put a set of tube steps on one of these crew cabs like a lot of the new steps have I just dont like the old aluminum running boards and my wife wants some steps at stock height it still sits high enough that she has trouble jumping in the truck.

I got some other mods that I am thinking about I peeled all of the old molding off and the adhesive strips the other day with the hot water washer. I really want to paint it gonna see if the photo shop guys can do my paint that I want to see what it will look like, but this is a pay as you play truck no payments period and my wife and myself are wanting to buy another house and some acreage of our own so am trying to save every penny for that right now so paint will be on hold.
