Header help.

I know this has been discussed here in years past but I've never seen a definitive answer. I have a 68 c10,going with a 454. I want to keep headers up,running alongside the inside frame rails. I can't stand to see headers hanging down low. Anyone recommend a brand or application that will do this?

I used Hedmans for ‘68-72 Chevelle. Fit perfectly, but had to do away with the stock shift linkage. You want to get the ball and socket type, mine are 68190. My build is on a budget so I didn’t go with the coated ones. Hope this helps.

Also you will need to replace the stock trans crossmember with a tubular type, and drill holes in the trailing arm crossmember for the pipes to pass through.

I used Doug’s headers, not Doug Thorley. My good friend has a’68 with a 454 and we installed Doug’s headers probably 4 years ago. They fit very well, don’t leak and still look very good. And I know what will be going on my truck. Thanks

I can help! I spent hours upon hours researching this topic. You really need to know which heads you have to establish what header to use. Hedman would not work on my promaxx aluminum heads for my 383 stroker (according to promaxx themselves). In the end I concluded the best fit and performance would be Doug Thorely's D371 Tri-y's. No need to cut the frame to fit and they do not sweep super low when viewing it from the side. They will also fit nicely through the frame. If you want a longer lower version you can get the D372-Y's. But I went with the snugger fit.

Hedman 68198 ( Chevelle full length elite ) fit good on my '67 with stock stands in the forward position, lokar cable tranny linkage. Did not have trouble with any clearance except for a small dimple required on the passenger side lower A-arm shaft nut. Tranny cross member was not a problem for me.

I have used Patriot headers, made with the same tooling as Dougs, but they are thinner gauge tubing (16 vs 14, as I recall). They tuck up very nice, much better than Hedman or Hooker.

Looks like those Hedman Elite Chevelle headers tuck up a lot better than the ones made specifically for our trucks.
