Still doing bodywork. probably have a few weeks before the paint goes on. Haven't really been taking any pics, I really don't want any reminders of how much I hate body and prep work.

Re: 5.7 TBI in an 86????? Anyone done this swap??

We got some more body work done on the truck. Basically, all that is left is blocking and priming and blocking some more. I also found a 91 burb front clip on Craig's list and we got it installed. I still have to figure out the light wiring? Now I have an extra front clip to sell and hopefully get some of the cash I spent back. Hope to buy paint next week. here are the pics:

front clip ready to disassemble:

86 ready for the new support and grill:

Core support installed and grill mocked up:

Thanks! Things are really coming together now, it has been way more work than back when I was full of pee and vinegar. Seems like body work is better left to the young guys

I saw your post in Glock's thread. I have been looking at my diagrams, but none of them have a red wire.

Thanks a lot Joe! Did you just go wire to wire on yours or did it come with that grill setup already on it?

As far as finding this one, it was more a matter of convienence. I looked at it last year and he wanted $300 the outer metal isn't bad at all a few dents here and there. but the inner fenders are trash rusted out in the brace area on both sides. The core support also had a few bad spot (didn't know when I bought it). Anyway, I only wanted the grill and support but he wasn't seperating it. So the other day I saw in Craigs for $150 and pulled the trigger thinking I could sell whats left for around $100? It was just a few miles from my job.

No problem Mike!
That's cool!

I actually swapped the entire harness from my parts 'burb. So it was just plug and play. I have a schematic at home that should cover your '86
I'll check it when I get home in a few. It should be the same colors

here is a typical 81-87 front light diagram.
looks like the colors are the same.

you should be able to go color to color.
I guessing you have checked, but have you looked to see if the '91 underhood light harness will plug into the bulkhead connector on your '86?

oh and the other thing is to make sure you ground both sides of the lights. there is a grounding lug on both sides. if you only ground one your light s will do some strange stuff.

Thanks Joe! I will get back on it tomorrow hopefully. I know I can't use the bulkhead connector because it's not there on the 91 harness. No big deal, should be pretty straight forward with the help of your diagram.

Size 18" yes, I'm aware of the rotor issue. No problem there, I'll just taper the rotor back a little. (machine access at work)

Thanks again for the diagram. I went wire to wire and it worked great. Nice tip on the ground too, turns out the pass. side ground was cut and kept it from working. Spliced it back together and had all the lights working.

Re: 5.7 TBI in an 86????? Anyone done this swap??

Well, I thought the body was pretty much rust free but I did find a little spot on the drivers side cab corner. Here are some pics of the repair:
Aww Dang! Rust found

Cutting it out

Cleaned out

Traced a filler piece on sheetmetal, cut it out with the bandsaw

Tig Welded in the patch (looks like crap, just about out of gas....doh!)

Welds ground down

Sanded and ready for mud
