Re: '72 gmc

Coming along nicely.

A tip for the rear shocks, get some new bolts to mount the tops further back toward the rear. There should be holes in the bracket to do this. May need to open them up to get the shock bolt to go in. This bolt is the same one that goes on the upper in the front.

The shocks will be sitting more vertical and will respond better. I did this to my GMC with leafs and it made a big difference. It is a lot easier to do it now before you put the bed on.

It is always great to see shiny paint on parts you’ve worked your tail off to prep.

Finished the front end today. Installed the a-arms, front brakes, steering box/components and shocks. I also installed the front shock support brackets.

Its a roller again and ready to install the cab.

Re: '72 gmc

Thanks guys.

It looks like progress is going to slow down for awhile. I won't be getting everything back from paint for a couple weeks. He is cutting & polishing after he gets all the color on.

I ordered the wood bed material from my local hardwood retailer today. I decided to go with Sapele. Has anyone used that as a bed material?

Here's a pic I found online....

Re: '72 gmc

Started the sanding process today on the cab and pieces that were painted last week. Nothing more I can do to the chassis until the cab goes on....

Re: '72 gmc

Finally picked up the bed from paint today. I also picked up the new driveshaft. When I test fit it (before I painted it) I found out the rear section was too long. Back to the driveline shop tomorrow to get it cut down........

I also noticed that since the truck is now about 6" lower than stock, the stock carrier bearing bracket held the driveline too low to ever get good balance. I had to cut it up and re-build it to raise the front section of driveshaft higher (about 2.5").

Re: '72 gmc

Got the trim installed on the bed and test fit, cut and drilled all the bedwood so I can spray the finish on it.

I used Sapele. Its almost identical to Mahogany.

Finished the wood this weekend and got it loosely put back in. Want to get some stuff done on the chassis before the bed goes on. Hoping to get it back on the truck in the next couple weeks.
