Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

I'm not at all sure there is any difference in the backs, maybe there is.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

Interesting... I was resigned to the fact I was going to have to carve a chunk of foam to match mine.

My custom seat foam number is also 3816940 like oldtrux's.

Has anybody else tried the foam from Tuckers for their 62-66's?

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

Oldtrux it looks like it fits to me! Have you installed the seat covers yet? There must be some reason why this foam is only for 67. The difference must be negligible.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

It might be the negligible knowledge of the aftermarket manufacturers. The documentation in this thread (first page) and the pictures verifies that it does fit. Just sayin.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

Here are a few pics my old foam.

Oldtrux, does your new and/or old foam have these features:?

The bottom has three deep grooves extending almost the entire length.
There is another deep groove going across the rear edge on the bottom.
The sides seem to wrap around the springs. I have a feeling this is due to the foam deforming over the years.

I don't really see what these would be for or how they would affect the fit or feeling of the seat.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

On that last pic thats how the foam is made (both ends) on the original, same as my original. The aftermarket is made the same way. As far as the grooves I doubt the aftermarket has them but hey - It Fits.
Good Job oldtrux

Agree! (However, oldtrux's new foam doesn't wrap around the springs.)

Oh, I see what you mean now. None of the aftermarkets will have that. I'm still going to use it if I stay with this seat.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

I was thinking of using this also on the bottom springs after I cover with burlap:
https://www.albrightssupply.com/Flex...8-p/flex18.htm
And put burlap on the bottom of the foam also. May help with the spreading of the seat springs. When I was rehabbing mine the springs were tied with string in places, only assume it was for that.

I need new foam desperately. Unfortunately the previous owner installed a nice new high end cover right over the seat without taking the time to repair the springs and foam. My seat looks good only it sags when you sit to drive it. I use a upholstered cushion from Walmart for support until I commit and tear apart the bottom and repair mine correctly.

So the 67 bottom foam from Tucker’s ($149.00) is correct for a 1966?

Thanks

Greg

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

I wonder if you had this deluxe foam piece , then cut the bottom at the height of the side notched springs , would it then be the correct height foam for a standard sprung seat. I have a standard sprung vinyl seat I'd like to look like the full foam fabric version.

You are correct.

I worked in an upholstery place for the High School work program back in the 60’s and the springs are always tied first the opposite direction the springs ran about 4” apart in rows and secured to the frame. This is what kept your springs from shifting when you sit down. If I remember correctly the burlap came next followed by a layer of cotton and then foam followed by a piece of jute...something like that. Upholstery lessons are everywhere online. YouTube has a bunch. If the springs aren’t secured with twine the whole seat will shift

If you have the Full Foam seat!
Not the one with the flat springs that run (straight) front to rear of the bottom seat frame.

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

Bumping this thread. My '64 has the full-foam seat (zig-zag springs). I can't find the foam on Tucker's site in 2022. Anyone know of other sources now?

Re: May Have Found Custom Seat Foam :)

It turns out that Classic Industries carries it too, albeit only in a 2-piece kit for cushion and back rest.

Side note - any recommendations for the best fitting side support springs? Mine on the driver's side are broken.
