Dead truck
Was driving my 71 C20 and it died when i finelly got it home i noticed the live wire to the choke was off would this be the cause.

Need WAY more info.
Do you have HEI (my first guess is a dead ignition control module). Are you getting fuel? Are you getting spark? Does it turn over? Is it making noises when turning over? Does it sound different when turning over than it used to (like sounds like it's spinning faster - broken timing chain.) No, a wire off the choke shouldn't cause it unless it shorted something out.

Yea, if the truck was warmed up enough the wire coming off the choke wouldn't have made it die? Unless the choke snapped shut or something. Can you take the air cleaner off and see the choke butterfly closed?
Where you sitting at a stoplight or did it die under load? braking? etc. |

It only seams to do it when i i drive it for a long distance the t-stat is new and im not over heating.

If that choke wire was fused you probably burned the fuse and your choke will not pull off so it will be too rich when warmed up.

If it runs when cold, and dies after driving a while, then starts when it cools off, it's most likely the coil.

Where is this coil you speak of. Yea it runs good but whe nit gets hot it sputters. And the gas seems to just cook off when im at a light. When it died yesterday i took off the filter and smoke was comming out the carb.

Coil location depends on if you have an hei or points style distributor.
Do you have 8 or 9 plug wires coming off the top of the distributor? 8-HEI 9-traditional, the wire that doesnt go to a spark plug goes to coil. Is there a large square thing in the top of the distributor cap? If yes then you have HEI and the square thing is the coil.

Also it could be a coil or it could be vapor locked if your fuel line is running to close to the head/manifold. When it dies does it still have spark?

Ok so iv got an HEI and yes still has spark. Just hell to start have to let it cool for a bit.
