Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

My wiper motor has burned out I guess, stopped working and makes an awful buzzing sound.

Anyway, truck is my daily right now so I need to replace it. Is this a difficult task and what else do I need to look at while I'm at it? Any seals, etc.
1972 GMC

Looks like a pain in the ass so I'm just prepping myself.

Thanks

3 screws hold it to the firewall under the dash along with electrical. Some clips hold the linkage after you take off the cowl.

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

It is more difficult if you have AC because of all of the hoses taking up space under there but removing them is easy and once done you can get to the motor easy.

It wood b best to first try lubricating the linkage and include the wiper towers to see if it is just bound up due to 40years and seeing no maintenece

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

It's brutal with AC. It was the #139th thing I took off my truck, and about the 20th thing from the interior, so it's well buried. If you can get away with lubricating or something, do it. Otherwise plan a solid day I think to do it right.

I'm particularly bitter about it because my wiper arm linkage was installed backwards, and it -almost- works that way, but binds. So I spent a lot of time thinking I had done something wrong with the motor...

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Wow, what a PITA that was last night! Getting those 3 screws back was just about the most difficult thing I've done on this truck. But now I have working wipers again, not sure but the motor that I pulled out looks original.

So how did you fix it? Clean and lube or replace motor?

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Replaced the motor, it was shot. Bought a rebuilt one and swamped the pump over.
Ended up having to take my ignition switch out in order to have a straight access to the top screw.

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Wow, you did have a job there!

My washer has not worked since 1990, when the truck was painted. They painted over the nozzles so that may be all that is keeping it from working. I'll find out soon (I hope).

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Does anyone have a picture of where the wiper motor is under the dash? I can't seem to locate it. The emergency brake on my '67 is not helping the view much.

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Look through the cowl vents for the bolt that holds your linkage to your wipers. It is right there on the inside. Sort of on the fuel gage side of the radio up high.

Re: Replacing wiper motor...difficult task?

Here is a view of mine as viewed through radio cutout. It has the wrong washer pump attached to it. Second picture is of the new pump and the OE pump off the wiper motor.

Plus a thread to maybe help some more.

Been there, done that with AC. It's not a PITA it's a ROYAL PITA!
