PS bracket

For some reason I can't figure out how this bracket works. Do I have the wrong one?

flip it over and around the slot goes on the water pump, or at least one of em I got does.

Now, where it bolts to the head, the inside hole is not drilled. Do you know what size hole I need to drill to run a 3/8 bolt?

Wait a minute, if you don't have this hole, then you may need a different setup. Earlier engines (and perhaps some modern aftermarket heads) do not have that hole. There are several different PS bracket designs. The earlier ones mount lower on the engine and use a different mounting system. I just went through this a while back... I had to do alot of homework before I got the right assemblies.

Do you have a short or long water pump?

I havent' seen a set up yet that I'm not going to have to drill something. Let me explain.
I have a long pump. My block doesn't have the lower holes drilled in the block either. So the 68-72 pump bracket won't fit. The set up I'm trying to fit now is off of a '77. The block casting number comes back as a '79, so I figured this would work, but the only holes that I have to work with currently without drilling anything else is the top outside hole on the head and the one on the water pump. The bracket I have also has a piece that attaches off of a stud on the exhaust manifold bolt.

Do you know of another set up that might work? I've been around and around on this.

not sure on drilling a hole but I see it's dimpled. I would agree alot of ppl have had opther brackets and made em work. Might be able to get by without using that bolt if you had the other part and what not. We also used a 76 straight 6 pump and bracket on a v8 once made our own longer bracket from an exhaust hanger.

I walked around the Pull A Part yesterday and every set up that I saw used either that top inside bolt or one of the bottom two in the block. I pretty much only looked at trucks though.

i'd just drill some holes you can get a 3/8-16 tap and drill set that will make it pretty easy but you might be better off drilling the block some people have problems drilling the heads

Why would drilling the block be easier than the heads? Also, I've got a good tap set. Do you just drill a 3/8 hole and run the tap or do you have to drill a different sized hole? Thanks.
