47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

Okay so here's the situation
Originally I bought a complete 1951 3100, cab ended up having alot of bondo and fiberglass. So I picked up a clean rust free 1952 cab cheaper then what I'd have in patch panels for the 51. Cab was gutted no doors etc.

So I went to bolt up the strikers from the 1951 cab onto the new cab and that's when I hit my issue. The strikers are different I know the door handles changed to push button for 52 and up, checked brothers trucks and there is different strikers for 52-54 trucks.

Now my question I have is I don't like the push button handles I want the swing handles will my 51 latches work with the 52 strikers? Or can I use 52 latches with 51 swing handles? Or am I stuck with the push button handles?

Also to save myself future surprise's is there any other changes between 51 and 52 cabs besides the door jamb?

I have wondered the same thing. Someone has bound to have done it by now.

No they won't. But the strikers should swap.

47/51 strikers.

52 to 59 door strikers

Properly mounted but worn out 51 door striker

You have my curiosity up now and if I remember when I get home I'll try one of my early strikers on the 53 cab I have.

71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Right on I know fersure the pre 51 strikers don't fit the 52 and up cabs they stick out about a 1/8" and the bolt holes don't line up.

What I'm trying to figure out is if the pre 51 latches work with the 52 and up striker since they look different or can I use pre 51 handles with the later latches to keep the swing door handles.

51 was a odd year for the door , it could have been 51 cab and turn down handles or 51 cab with 52 type with push buttons both with vent windows.

You can use the 51 turn down handle doors and latches with the 52 striker on a 52 cab but not the other way round, You can't use a 52 striker on a 51 cab without a lot of work, The striker area is recessed in 52 up and some late 51's. Its the main reason no one lists parts for a 51 door. The latches work the same except for the push button VS turn down handle.

Just as an FYI if you go Altman latches you need to tell them you have doors from X year and a cab from x year.

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

I once parted out a 51 with one piece windows and got these strikers that you see in my photo in the center. My understanding is they were "adapter" strikers for the 51-53 cab using the one piece window swing handle doors.

I used them on my truck for years with the swing handles on a 53 cab.

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

The left one is 47 - 51 the two others are variations of the 52-63 . The far right I believe is an original for the later mid to later 50's and the center is 60's manufacture

The door post recess is different, These two pictures show the differences

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

Those might be "adapted" rather than "adapter."
In the early 60's my grandfather rolled his 48 1 ton dualie about 2 miles from the house and we repaired it that next summer and the door he got was a pushbutton door and we had to go back to the wrecking yard and get the latch to make it work. That was my first shot at body work pushing the cab back out and getting everything to fit.

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

I've read this thread but didn't see a definite answer. What I have is a 1953 Cab and I just bought a nice pair of 1950-earlier doors without vent windows. I am wondering what exactly I need to get them mounted.. Do I use my factory 1953 strikers or do I need the 1951-earlier strikers? If I do need the pre-1951 strikers what mods are needed to mount them to my cab....Thanks for any help!

You need the middle ones on my photo above. It looks like those reproductions in a previous post look just like them but without the notch cut out of it. So you could get one of those new strikers and cut the notch with a dut off wheel in a die grinder and wham, you have the adapter strikers for the early doors in the late cab.

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

Back from the dead since I'm finally getting around to this.

So I ordered 52 latches, strikers, & handles will they physically bolt on to my 51 doors?

My 51 doors a clean and in good shape and I don't mind shaving the key hole for the 51 swing handles and drilling the extra hole, but if it gets to the point that I have to re-drill everything it might just be easy to abandon the 51 doors and find a set of 52+ doors.

I just want to know if the latch mounting locations are physically different between the pre 52 doors and the 52-54 doors?
It looks like it might work has anyone here done this?

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

The push button handles won't bolt on and I don't believe that latches will either!

Let's see if someone has other info but I don't believe the interchange.

Re: 47-51 vs 52-54 door handle/latch question

I've never tried that but seem to have ended up with avbunch of 51 doors over the years. I looked a while back and don't have one push button door on the place out of about ten doors.

In several 50's movies featuring pre 52 ADs and cars the door handles were drooping even then.
