sorry to be the bearer of bad news - but, generally speaking, it's illegal to do what you're planning. recommend check with DMV or AZ state police to see what the dealio is. This is why you sometimes see people sell cabs with a title. Still - check with your state and see what they say. What you DON'T want to do is track down some rivets, install it, and sweat registration the whole time and potentially get in hot water.

Tracking down the rivets could flag authorities as well. This is a project that is best handled legally, or kept off the boards and off anyone's radar. It's been discussed heavily in detail but always boils down to the same thing: many will tell you to do the wrong thing and it doesn't matter etc., but none of them would be willing to trade places with you if you were to get caught.

Everyone knows a guy who knows a guy who does it for a living and never gets in trouble, but last I checked no common auto mechanic can supersede state or federal laws or mandates, which really is what you're up against.

Best of luck with your situation.

Re: 1972 vin tag rivets

Look at AMC and Chrysler parts suppliers. They used the same rivets on non VIN tags

For restoration of the same vehicle you removed it from. Not to knowingly swap a cab that left a GM plant with a specific VIN, swap that to another cab, and falsely represent that vehicle as another.

That restoration is also subject to question if a police officer or dmv rep suspects it to be removed or altered in any way.

Let's make this simple, am I allowed to swap a 69 Camaro ZL1 tag onto a 6 cyl Camaro and sell it to you for a million dollars? No, it's fraud, and regardless of the value of the vehicle in question be it the Camaro or a rusted out worthless Peugeot, fraud, is fraud, is fraud, more so punishable when you're knowingly trying to deceive the legal system.

Re: 1972 vin tag rivets

To further this, I've already completed a 71 cab swap on a 69 frame, here in California. I called the CHP and explained. I have an appt. On 8 Oct to go down and replace my vin, with a CA blue vin that will match the frame, but the DMV receives documentation stating that my truck is a cab swap, so there's a paper trail if I were to ever try and defraud someone.

Clean title stays a clean title, end of story.

Re: 1972 vin tag rivets

Beeson, this is indeed a rough welcome to the board. By the way - welcome to the board! Your dilemma is one that faces every cab swapper. There are great reasons to swap a cab, but this is the problem one runs into. In the end, it's your choice - and based on the above help, as you can see - you can get rivets. Whether or not it will look factory when you're done, well, only the DMV's opinion really matters. Hope this works out for you, but, at least you can make an informed decision and know if there's any risk. AZ is a pretty understanding state, well, compared to CA, which isn't saying much - but I've lived in both. CA sucked, but there is a hot rod lobby at least. TX, where I live now, is ok. Good luck and I hope this all works out for you.

Gentlemen,

There may be several legal issues involved here. As a matter of forum policy, I'm closing this thread.

Thank you.
