put on my lowering shackles today. definately going to have to notch something on the bed. they stick up over the frame by a couple inches.

front suspension and rear diff are installed. Cross threaded the dang pitman arm stud so have to replace it...




emergency brake cable is giving me some fits. I found a picture I took before taking it apart so I think I have it now.


I realize now I put the brackets on the crossmember on the top instead of the side where they should be. I was wondering where the tranny was going to sit.

putting in my new ebrake cables. I think its still to short.
i got new ebrake cables and the intermediate cable seems to short. This will be a series of pics starting at one drum and going around to where I run out of line. Is it short or am I missing something?

rear shocks installed


calipers installed. working on the new brake lines. custom factory fit my butt...


looks similar but i think my rearend is from a 73 because the new ones fittings are to big.


also because it looks like this rear center hose with the built in tee started in 73.

got the motor mount brackets put back in and the steel lines for brakes run and secured.


if you put the headlight buckets in like this:


you end up with this: Cockeyed lights


ahhh much better: Put in the hood latch, grill support, battery tray and the corner pieces that hold the fenders.

put in my AC condenser after cleaning it up and painting it.


grabbed the visors and thought id clean them up and see if they are salvageable.


after cleaning


one has about an inch of material separating from the seam. ill probably just put some glue on to keep it from running and call it good.

decided to cut out a little piece of rot ive been go back and forth on doing. Need to go get some sheetmetal for patches.

so I cut out a small piece around where I could tap my pointy hammer and bust through metal to rusty underside.


I cut a new piece and welded it in tack by tack and grinded it down.



As I ground I kept blowing off other tiny peices with rust underneath. I'd wirebrush and clean down to metal again and fill with weld.



anyway I've finally decided I need to cut out a bigger patch. My problem is I need to cut out the lip and am worried about making it look semi decent when putting in a patch panel or new piece I cut.

took the motor apart down to a shortblock.


only a little carbon on the pistons and the cylinder walls are really smooth with no lip at the top.


pulled all the glass out of the doors and removed the door locks and handles. One more thing ready for sand blasting.

I built a little stand to keep the glass out of the way. I like signs...

I've got the same concern with my right fender. Prolly end up test fitting it with the door installed before getting too far. I had to cut the lip and fold over the new patch, too, but I think my issue came from warpage from welding.

Cheap crap patch panels..

I cut out the rusty part back to good metal. First time cutting anything major.
I started by cutting the fold to get a feel for how deep it was and what it takes to cut it.


not bad so I moved on to cutting out the rust.


ok its not so bad. lot of sparks on my legs. i can handle it.

hey look it came away from the support.


forgot to get pics of me cutting out the spot welds at the pinch on the bottom. but I just held the cutoff wheel on it and went back and forth until I could pry the piece away.


Went to the truck shop and got a patch panel. Not sure Im impressed.
the depth at the bottom seems bigger.
There is no hole for the inner fender.
There is no dip/body line whatever in the edge.


Pretty sure I got the right part


the guy at the store was pretty nice. I couldnt quite see how Im going to fold over the edge on the new one and he whipped out the ancient brown assembly manual and thumbed through (no index as you know) until he found it and said to just bang it down into place.




so since Ill never get the wheel side of the patch to match the lines of the fender Im thinking about just cutting what I need from the patch. Something like this

Only cutting out what needs to be replaced from the patch is usually the best route, I think, especially for something like a fender corner like what you are doing.

The patches are always pretty disappointing. The bottom line on the label in the picture you posted says it all. I don't recall any on Mustard not having to be pounded into shape at some point in the installation process.

New radiator came today. Looks really nice.
couple problems. it didnt come with a rad cap. not a dealbreaker but for the kind of money I paid...

THe temp sending unit for the fans doesnt fit the bung in the radiator. I can probably pickup an adapter but again this isnt a mass produced part. It was built when I bought it and making the hole the right size would seem to make sense...

SO by that time I was getting annoyed. I tried to put it in the radiator supports and it wouldnt fit. Rad is to wide.


SO I get to cussing and yelling and thinking about how Im going to cut the bracket and weld in another inch or just send the damn thing back.

My buddy came over and said dont those tabs do something? Well come to find out the tabs fit in the brackets just fine.



Tightened it down and its solid as a rock.


looks good too




ok in The rad makers defense... The bung is not for the sending unit... Its for the petcock. Sending unit goes in the intake manifold.

So other than the rad cap it's an awesome looking piece of Aluminum that is a direct fit. Im happy.

wired what I could of the headlight relays and fan relay.
looks like a rats nest anyway...




put the headlight relays behind the battery while I was playing with fun wires...
sneaked it behind the rad.


Got my new motor mount inserts put in and the clamshells painted.

patched a rust spot in the cowl. Need a few more touches and some more grinding but its getting there.




welded the small holes on the door. Now on to the bigger ones.

painted the engine and started trying to fit it into the motor mounts. from my research it doesnt look like the are the proper mounts or clam shells. The PO was using them but I know it was missing a bolt on one side... Wondering if thats because he couldnt get it in.




have some kind of weird oil pan with 2 dipstick spots that was filled in with half a tube of RTV... So i left the pan off for now.

wrong mounts but its so close Im going to get a pry bar and a friend and jam that bolt through there.


other side has a bolt through it. (these are just some scrap bolts for testing)



if the pry bar doesnt get it Ill get some tubular perches.

I had the same problem so I re-drilled the towers to work. I was quite frustrated the 72 mounts didnt lit like I have read they should

Well a little redneck strategery and I think I got it.
I put the perches on the mounts and then lowered it all in and bolted the perches back in.

Im now thinking maybe if I had just loosened the perches I could have gotten it but this was easy enough.

Now whether this is "correct" or not I don't know but as long as the tranny goes in I think im fine.
