Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Picked up my parts today! (Still no pix probably wont bother uploading any until I go back to WA and have spare time).

Got the upper BJ's in (easy) but the lowers meh not so much. I rented a tool but I couldnt figure it out in mulitple configurations so Im going to get another one from somewhere else (got it from carquest) I watched a youtube video of someone doing it with an autozone kit.

I spray bombed the cross shafts for the A arms and then said ya know what I'll regret bombing the spindles and shafts so they'll get powdercoated too. Dropping them off tomorow hopefully he can do them quick otherwise I'll have to get someone to pick them up for me and wait until next time.

Right now its a 4.5" front drop and will be a 5 or 6" rear drop. Idk if I'll C notch or not.

My ? for tonite is-

Would it be OK to powdercoat the crontol shafts for the A arms? Im planning on doing the spindles (drop) and the 4 shafts.

Everythings poppin' with red bushings and calipers and black powdercoat

Im scared the truck will be too nice to drive... But Im having fun (minus the lower BJ's and not having the spindles and stuff powdercoated earlier......)

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

You can coat the shafts. Just tell the guy if he doesn't mask off the areas where the bushings go you're gonna burn his shop down.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

It is a 1969 2wd V-8 truck built in Atlanta. Any other info has to come from the SPID (on glovebox door)

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Got about $70 bucks for the cab (STRIPPED) plus a bunch of small crap I had in the barn.

Still need to do/buy:
Strip frame/trailing arms
Paint install trailing arm bushings
Figure out what LS engine brackets I should use (if I go this route)
Strip/paint rebuild rear brakes/axle
Buy front bumper & figure out what brackets Im missing (have some not all)
Buy bumper/brackets for the rear (sport)
Buy 6" Rear springs/Airbags (already have spring retainers powdercoated)
Buy inner/outer tie rod ends
Buy Idler arm/Pitman arm
Buy steering box (quickturn?...)
Buy a SWB bed

TIRES AND WHEELS

I really wanna get ATVPRO (guy that builds sick crewcabs here in spokane) to build a reg cab for me to take to TN with me oneday, but I have nowhere to store it so until better circumstances Im cabless still.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

I had the spindles (dropped) and cross shafts powdercoated I explained to the guy I didnt want certain areas powdercoated (see above post) but I didnt get to pick them up-dad did. Im trying to get him to send some pix so I can tell what he coated but no luck.

If the areas are coated-what should I do (Id like to know ahead of time so when I get to work on it for the 20 days or so next time I can work on it not wait for it to get back from powdercoaters..)

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

No progress unfortunately. Im only home for maybe a month out of the year and building trucks is pretty low on the to do list while im home.

Need to finish installing the BJs and need some advise/help/how to on the control arm shafts (been so long im not sure what parts I have/need/)

I have most or all the stuff for the front crossmember/suspension/brakes just need to do some work...

Thanks for the bump lol Id nearly forgotten about this thread.

No progress :/ hoping to get the a arm shafts put in next month (October 15) and maybe blast and rebuild the rear control arms. Joined the military in 2012 and haven't played with old trucks besides when I'm home on leave. Will probably have dumb questions next month Stay tuned! Hah
