What would you use between Leaf Springs? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

70 rear spring Leafs.
I took apart the leaf springs to paint. It had a small piece (6" long)of plastic or teflon on top of the overload spring. What have you guys used between leafs?

1. Nothing?
2. Put them back like they were?
2. Teflon between all leafs? If so, where could I get them? How much of the leaf do you layer?
3. Or use Grease?
4. Anything else I haven't mentioned?

I just cleaned mine and put them back together when I add an add-a-leaf, left the piece of plastic off.

I think LMC sells the plastic pieces for 5-7 dollars.

I put 'air' between mine on my old CJ. Only squeaking I had was from my urathane bushings

It was domestic... I bottled some air in the airplane while I was flying from Arkansas to Vegas. I was happy with my results; springs were quiet, and I swear that the quality of air has an effect on the amount of travel the spring will produce!

All of the street rod places sell the plastic by the roll. You just cut to length. I line all of my leaves personally. The more the better.

You'll likely pay more, but your local spring shop will have it too. Look in the phone book under "springs".

I tried LMC catalog and did not see them in there. I will call them and call locally. Thanks for the hints.

1) too much booze

That was about the 'best' air I could get for free. He he he I kinda stole it from the plane in a big jar I had in my bag

Found a place that would punch 1/2" holes in the ends of each leaf and snap a 2-1/2" round teflon insert in the ends. This is how many new springs are done. very reasonable on price too. He said he would heat up the spot and punch the hole out. This shop is in the business of re-arching leafs and working on suspensions. What are your thoughts about doing this? Any pros and cons? Am thinking I may go tomorrow so any advice tonight would be appreciated.

Teflon buttons are great. I have a set of real expensive Posies brand springs on my 54 that are like that. Very smooth and quiet.

Well I went to the spring shop and not only had the teflon pads installed but had them re-arch the springs. They were both sagged about 3/4". One was 1/4" different than the other. Not too bad, but they did all of it for $60.00, turnkey. I couldn't pass it up. I came home and installed them with poly bushings. I'm glad I had the pads installed. Can't wait to see how it feels. Will be awhile.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm
