Question roller tip rocker ? sbc

so i have been driving my brand new GM long block L31 vortec and she is doing good . i have a set of brand new comp cams SELF-aligning roller tip rockers 1417-16 part # or https://www.summitracing.com/parts/c...7-16/overview/ to show you what i have . these are from a left over old project i never used them on . pic dont show them as self aligning but they are .

would i be crazy to install these on the engine ? would i see much of anything ?

otherwise what do i do with them ? try and sell them i be lucky to get even close to new at there price point .

thanks for any real world feedback you guys might be able to give me .

I had some and did not notice a difference, they are only good to 300 lbs spring rate. they are cast so the rocker ratio is more accurate then factory stamp steel rockers.

Engine Masters did a great test on roller rockers. Basically you gain nothing.

Why take the chance of something going wrong when there is nothing to gain.
In other words if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am with GaryD

Maybe spend your money on some shiny parts instead. Chrome valve covers with your name of the vehicle. Like Betsy or whatever you call your vehicle.

I wouldn't mess with it either if it is running fine now.

Re: roller tip rocker ? sbc

I have the Summit Racing long slot roller tip rockers in my 350. Bought them years ago when I built the engine. They were all the rage back then and I basically bought them as an "upgrade" from stock stamped rockers. They tend to be a little noisy at low RPM... and there is no significant gain whatsoever.

Re: roller tip rocker ? sbc

In the late, great John Lingenfelter book, he states that usually with the valve spring pressure the roller tip don't actually roll anyway. The slide just like the stock rockers do. But, he also stated they are closer to the advertised ratio of 1.5 or 1.6.

Re: roller tip rocker ? sbc

I have a subscription to MTOD and watched it last night. The roller tip rockers made no change. The main thing to take away from that test was as spring pressures go up, so does the deflection of the stock SBC 3/8" rocker arm studs. Where horsepower was gained was with a 7/16" stud and/or some kind of deflection control of the 3/8" stud (i.e. a stud girdle). Also using a 1.6 ratio vs. the stock 1.5 ratio made more power. But that might also be because of the head they used. They were spinning that Small Block to 7,000 RPM's too. Which most street engines will not see.
