Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

I figure that's just a generic photo. Mine are definitely black as you can see. I figured the part number ending in "B" signified black.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Wished I had this info last nite, shipping is $10. Think I could call rock auto and have them add these to my existing order?

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Beats me. They ship from so many different warehouses that its hard to say if they could combine them. Usually when I order from them over a weekend, I get a tracking number about 6am on Monday morning signifying they're packaged and ready for the carrier to pick up.

I will say, even with shipping from Rockauto, they were cheaper total than I could find anywhere. Seems like it was 21 dollars total or something like that.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Just called, it comes from a different warehouse so I'dhave to pay the $10 shipping Im sure i'll order again from then so it can wait, besides it'll be years before this thing drives on the road

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Well im going to TN in 12 days, still trying to find someone in middle TN that has a relatively fast turnaround that does sandblasting want to get some parts (suspension) blasted painted and rebuilt (suspension stuff).

May call blast from the past in lebannon tn today sometime, always see them on the powerblock tv show on spike Probably get the front suspension done along with the trailing arms and track arm.

Will be driving down to FL to see my mom since I havent seen her in over 1 1/2 years! Planning on stopping @ summit to get some heavy parts (shhh dont tell the little lady, since its in ATL we'll just stop cause bad traffic or something )

What should I use to paint blasted metal (thinking tractor paint)?

Thanks!

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

I like John Deere Blitz Black if you have a sprayer setup. If not, Rustoleum protective enamel is good, too. I just also realized I have a buddy in Eagleville who has a sanblasting business (I don't know why I didn't think of that before). PM me if you're interested, and I can hook you up with him. He does good work, and will be cheaper (a bunch cheaper) than Blast From the Past cause he does dumpsters and stuff, and not hot rods for rich dudes, lol. He has done a bunch of car stuff on the side for another friend of mine, and hotrods himself. Also, I'm off work right now, so I may be able to give you a hand while you are in town.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Ok, just to keep track of things heres a list of things I have, things I need and pieces I want to get blasted:

A arms (4)
Swaybar (2)
Bushing clamps (8)
Trailing arms (2)
Track arm (1)
Dust shields (2)
Front coil Springs (2)

New parts collected:

-Kyb drop shocks (2)
-Brake pads(4)
-Rotors(2)
-Bearings
-Swaybar bushings (for both 1 1/4" and 1 1/16")
-T-Arm bushings
-71-72 style rubber brake hoses

Need to buy still:

-67-70 Drop spindles
-Calipers (Plan to brush on red high temp paint)
-Seals

My buddys neighbor does sandblasting/powdercoating so right now im hoping he can do the work and possibly coat as well if the price is right. I may not have the trailing arms done though. I would like to split them clean between the 2 pieces and weld them together THEN paint them, thoughts/opinions welcomed! At this time im not doing the frame, crossmember, or rear axle because I have no room to store them indoors in the dry. Also, Id like to go LS (4.8,5.3,6.0, or whatever I can get cheap) so Im not sure what motor mounts etc so Im just leaving it rusty and in the field for time being...3 more days till im back nestled in the TN hills for awhile so excited! Even have a line on a solid cab........someone looked at it but they couldnt agree on a price?

http://www.golsn.com/listings/automo...s/3463736.html

He claims it just needs outer rockers and maybe a spot or two on the floor, but thats what they all say. Here in the inland PNW its almost a desert in spots some very solid sheetmetal here Ive thought about collecting thru the summer then lugging it all back east this thanksgiving/christmas?

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Good plan on the trailing arms. Just check that they aren't thin anywhere. I've seen them rust plumb through. I feel ya on the rivets. They SUCK.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Here are directions:
Address is 1221 Carthage Hwy. Coming from Nashville direction it's exit 239B (Lebanon). You'll go past the fairgrounds and at the second light (Hwy 70) you'll make a right. Lebanon Distributing is there on the corner (for those that drive by landmarks). About a mile down on the left hand side is the shop. You'll see a building with orange and white strips (I think it use to be Porter Paint). I'm on the backside. I plan on being there early so stop by any time.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

Good news on the spindles, I like Summit. The place belongs to board member jmsaunders. We have been having these since Oct. or Nov. of last year, and he's hosting this month. There is an entire thread on it in the Tennessee section of the message board, over in the Regional area.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

You will definitely need something to compress the springs. I think it would be hard to do off of the truck, but maybe someone has done it. As far as high temp paint, check with Eastwood.

Re: Rebuilding 71 crossmember..

I think the header paint will be plenty heat resistant for the calipers, and look good, too.

I just don't know what to say about the spring install. I think it would be pretty easy with a spring compressor, just might be awkward trying to manhandle everything together without it being held in place on a frame. Have you seen any other threads or info on a free standing installation?
