If You're going to install the newer CS style then you need more resistance but not necessarily the diode.

This thread tells about the conversions.

thanks Vette, I have the diode, should I go ahead and install it? I am going to use the cs alternator on my 72

You will definitely need the resistor but the diode would prevent any feedback of current to the ignition system. In most cases it isn't needed because the resistor drops the current enough in the reverse direction to prevent the feedback. I wouldn't install it unless you get engine run on.

The brown wire will go to the L terminal and the S wire (voltage sensing) will go to the S terminal. Run it to the main junction of the alternator and battery.

If you have the battery charging gauge and you want it to work you'll have to run the alternator charging output wire to the main junction. Some guys run it to the battery positive terminal directly and then can't figure out why their gauge don't work.

I think I've posted this diagram before but Here it is.

Re: Another wiring question

well . everything was going fine up until last weekend. lost marker, tail and brake lights and also dome light, headlights still work. after some tracing and looking back at the wiring diagram, i pulled the light switch out, and unhooked it. if i jump from the red wire into the the light plug to the other wires i can get them to work. if i plug the headlight switch back in then they dont work. i tried 2 different switches and even exchanged the one i bought and still the same. any ideas anyone? thanks.

Re: Another wiring question

You have lost power to the orange wire in the fuse panel. It feeds all the items you mentioned. Jumping the red wire on the headlight plug to the various lights just confirms that. Make sure your stop/ tail and dome light fuses are good and the connections are clean.VV

Gah! i knew it was something stupid. Just a suggestion, but when your son tells you he checked the fuses you should probably double check before tearing the dash apart. LOL Thanks as always Vette
