power tool safety

I am always working on something all by myself and mistakes do happen I try to be safe but $hit happens like plugging the in the grinder with a cutting wheel and the switch is already on done it twice been lucky that I lost no fingers or worse .and welding and cutting under the truck with no safety glasses and wearing flip flops .I know now why there is wax in my ears it helps slow down the burning beads that fall in my ears .ok so I am a dumass so please don't do what I do .

Your very lucky! That could have been very bad indeed. Even in the best condition' s crap happens. Train yourself to wear all the annoying safety equipment, keep yourself in 1 piece.

Re: power tool safety

Good to know and although it sounds a bit weird...it sometimes is very helpful to see the lessons learned by other.
I'm a pretty hand guy but most of my shop experience has been in woodworking rather than in metal working.
I have a grinder but I have rarely used it.....looks like a full face shield is a good idea tho'.

Done that a few times with a wire brush on a drill, but not a cut off wheel!

Re: power tool safety

I'm no genius but I >>ALWAYS<< wear a face shield when using a cutting wheel and tell others when I'm present to do the same ever since I saw my neighbor put a chunk in his cheek just like above. Could have been worse.

My grinders have a safety switches, but I still hold then as if I have the switch on when I plug in. I've had some pretty dangerous tools in the past, meaning poor condition with switch issues, etc. (no more) and the good part about that is I learned how to be safe with dangerous tools.Much easier with safe ones now.

I am never going to look at this thread again. I never want to see a disc in cheek again. That man was in agony and I was his medic. Horrible experience

Re: power tool safety

When the cut-off wheels first became available,my company out-lawed the hold on switches on all power tools because of the number of accidents.
I use my safety equipment always!
And good wheels such as Dewalt or the equal.
Spend the money, get the good stuff and learn how to use them.
And,keep them dry too! When the water in it turns to steam, expands and explodes from the heat generated.
Mike.

Re: power tool safety

4x4k30; I feel your pain. I did almost the exact same thing only with a 4" wire cup on my angle grinder while ripping the paint off my hood. Completely stalled the grinder with my pant leg fabric but there switch was still on and had to yank the power cord out of the wall. It left a really *****'en mark on my thigh for a while. Good thing my neighbor was home. He came over and cut the thing out of my pant leg.
Soooooooo.......... Two lessions here folks, 1, WEAR your friggen saftey gear.
I know; Chicks dig scars but theres a limit to what they will put up with. Besides it could have been the family jewels. 2. keep your cell phone close to you( with in arms reach)especially if your working by yourself in the shop. 3. know where that fire extinguisher is. I don't mean to hijack your thread just want us to be safe.
