more nv4500 questions

the nv4500 that i purchased for my swap is a 4wd model . I was told it was out of a 3/4 ton 4wd with a 4.3 motor! I then took the rear housing of the tranny to check the 5th gear nut and there is a harmonic balancer on it . I was told that only diesels have the balancers on them . the good news is the nut is tight as new . would the balancer help with the loose nut problem? thanks !

Re: more nv4500 questions

Hi,

The balancer was used with dual mass flywheels on diesels to counteract vibrations that lead to main shaft failure and potential granading of the case. It was not intended to help the shaft nut keep tight. I have been assured by many diesel techs that the 5th gear issue pertained to only the Dodge NV4500, however I've never had the Dodge version apart so i haven't seen the difference between the two to varify if this is indeed true.

Re: more nv4500 questions

I've heard that Dodges are far more prone to the 5th gear nut problem. It's mainly due to the turned up Cummins engines putting down 1000+ ft. lbs. through those 4500's. It supposedly makes the mainshaft (?) deflect where it's not supported well enough to have that kind of torque put through it. This works the nut loose or can cause fretting of the shaft itself. I think I saw that in stock form that they are rated conservatively at 450 ft. lbs. Just keep the right fluid in it (that part is a big deal) and don't lugg it in 5th and I'm sure you'll be fine. As far as the balancer, I'd leave it if you were thinking of pulling it out.

In that case, I'd run it like you stole it. Remember the oil though. I was the recipient of one filled with regular gear oil. It turned my smoking deal into a headache!

Re: more nv4500 questions

Rumor has it that is harmonics from the Cummins that kills the 5th gear. They do come loose but people make it a bigger issue than it really is. The tranny can definatley take more abuse than the rated 460 ftlbs. Dodge hooked it to hotter diesels than that straight from the factory. I pulled one out of my 95 with 250k+ miles on it when I swapped in a 6spd. Trans is getting ready to get dropped into my 72 K20 behind a built 400.
