HEI to battery?

apparently my HEI isnt getting 12v when trying to start----aftermarket wiring---turning back the key from normal start position allows it to start...question can I just run a wire direct fron the battery to the HEI?

Re: HEI to battery?

For temporary testing/diagnostic purposes, yes, you can wire the HEI directly to the battery.

However, it order to shut the engine off, you will have to disconnect that wire from the battery. And you won't want to leave the HEI connected & powered on when the engine isn't running or it will drain the battery.

Re: HEI to battery?

check and see if the small wire that connects to your starter solenoid is still hooked up, this happened to me one time , you crank the engine over and then when you release the key the engine starts, the wire broke at the little terminal where it attached at the starter solenoid, fixed that and started up as normal, let us know what you find out

Re: HEI to battery?

Hei is wired incorrectly. You need a terminal that is hot during run AND start. Sounds like you are only hot during run

No you cannot wire directly to the battery or as said you always have to remove wire to turn off engine.

Re: HEI to battery?

The best way is to remove the bulkhead connector in the engine compartment and remove the resistor wire and replace it with at least a 14ga wire directly to the HEI cap

I would run a relay in this setup.

Re: HEI to battery?

Oh, no! I hope you feel better soon. It's a drag being sick.
Here is what I did regarding the HEI wiring.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=708975
I should add, with the wire connected to that spot on the firewall connector, check with a voltmeter the wire supplies 12V with key in the on position as well as in the start position.
If the wire connected to that spot on the firewall connector provides 12V only with the key in the on position and not when in the start position, that is because of the internal configuration of the ignition key switch. If you find that situation, you should be able to get 12V during start from the outboard terminal on the starter solenoid. The purpose of that outboard connector on the starter solenoid is to provide 12V during start to the original points distributor/coil.
