Went out to My uncles property in St. Maries Idaho on the 12th, Was out wheelin on his property ( 2000 acres in Benawa county ) blew out the rear end,
took both of my uncles frods to pull me out of the mud and i was stuck out there for two weeks waiting for parts, got back tues. it realluy sucked. but my uncle paid for it and let me work for him. I ended up needing a
new ring and pinion and one axle and new bearings. I spent about 1195.00, does that seem resonable? I just wanted to know what you guys thought.

Situations like that are never reasonable.

I'm guessing it's a 12-bolt. A lot of guys would tell you that you could have swapped out the whole rear end for next to nothing. If it had happened down the block from me, I would have given you my old 12-bolt.. but who knows when that would have blown.

Parts online you do the job... ~$400
Parts from a shop doing the work + markup... $600 - $800
Parts and labor from a reputable shop doing the work + peace of mind... $priceless.

The guys gotta make money doing the job... but that sure sounds like a lot for the work done.

alot of it was freight on the parts, we looked for something that would work but didn't find anything local, so after a week of looking an axle i just had to go for it.

That sucks. Nothing worse than breaking down a long ways from home. At least you were at a relatives house. The price sounds a little high, but most of that is probably due to the location. I have heard that installing those is a pain in the a$$. What gear ratio do you have?

yeah it's a really small town about 2500 residents, I have 3.08 all around. Now that I think about it I should have had them put 3.73 in it and swapped the front at a later date.

for that you probly coulda bought a junker 3/4 ton complete and got a 14 bolt out of the deal. and probably some other goodies. i know you can be in any town in america and no be too far away from at least one 73-87 3/4 ton 2wd or 4wd sitting for sale somewhere.

yeah, true and then I would have to change shock mounts and and get new wheels and tires, ect. believe me I looked for a cheap rig that I could buy and swap parts from. I just couldn't find anything local that was available and I just needed it done.

There was a blazer for sale on craigslist with 1 ton running gear the other day. Ya might look into it if you are considering bigger tires.
