Hey All - Suspension Mod Question - 1 Ton

1 Ton Dual 3800 Chevy 1954
I Believe it to be Mostly Stock - has Helps as it has a Hoist
Previous Owner says He had 4000 lbs in a few time .
I Think 3000 lbs would be Plenty , No sense Breaking or Bending something.

I have only done Bolt on Tweaks
Bushings , Anti-Drive Offsets etc. , Sway Bars for Handing etc.

Looking at the Weight of a 1 Ton Set Up = Huge Weight to Control , So ?
Thinking of Dropping Out the Helper Springs - each side 26 lbs .

Currently No Shocks on this Axle - Considering - Variable Spring Assisted
Shocks HD Approx. 375-500 lbs Spring Rating Each ..as they Vary .

Hoping those would Replace the Helpers & Gain better Ride Control all
at the same Timer ..

Helpers Currently don't Start to get engaged unless You have 1600 lbs Load .

Spring Assisted Shocks x 2 750 lbs - 1000 Lbs - looking for Strong Mounts ( ? )

Input on Spring Assisted Shocks ?

Looking for any Info or Others that may have taken Out the Helper Springs ( I Know I would have to get New Shorter U-Bolts )

Any Idea's or Input Thanks
Dan

Airbags. I'm talking to my local spring guy to come up with a set for my R30 dually that will ride better, then make up the weight carrying capacity with a set of airbags. That should improve ride when empty yet still handle heavy loads. I had 2600lbs in the bed once and it sat level.

I heard Air Bags will help on Ride & Hauling are You able to Keeps those with Just a Canister or do You
also Must Run Pump ?

Thinking of removing the 54 lbs of Helpers
Then adding Spring Assisted Shocks _ so I'd gain back 28 lbs ..

I believe it would only Cost about $150.00 to Convert and Gain some Axle Control .. all at the same Time .. , but I'm an Old Timer - LOL

My Immediate Issue is vehicle vibration Huge Vibration - comes up through - Chassis , Cab Doors , and
Entire Vehicle . Builds from 44 Mph to 52 Where is Gets Insane - then - Gradually gets less to 56 Mph and Gone @ 60 Mph !

1. I have done the Clutch in and Clutch Out , in Neutral , in Gear standing still - Don't find anything .
2. Tires I have 1 Tire & Rim that will be Exchanging out , but this can't be the Booming Vib that going on ..
3. Vib just seems to Heavy - so - I'm Wondering what does a Brake Drum Out of Balance be like ?_?
4. I Ran Dial Indicators all over the Driveshafts & Joint Flanges .. etc. all seem to be good ..
5. I used Infra Red - Gauge - Digital - CHECKING TEMPS - seeing If anything was Higher or Lower then all the Rest Area's ..
( 1 Brake Drum and Tire ) 28 Degrees High then the Rest .. That doesn't seem Like a Bearing - Brake Shoe on that side drags just a little and same Area - where Current Tire with Issues Is .. Just don't Feel this 44Mph to 56 Mph has anything to do with a Booming Vibration - that Feels like It would Shake Your Dentures Out - If I had them .. ( Any Thoughts )

6. When I Mentioned Temperature - After 2 Hour Ride and Hauling 3000 Lbs of River Bottom Top Soil , on a Hot Day 82 Degrees.
My Axle and Rear Brake Drums where 114- 118 on Axle , 125 -137 on Rear End , Brake Drums - with in 2 min. of Stopping
After this Haul - coming in Warm Stopped and Read . Hottest Spot on Brake Drums 148 Degrees - 137 Degree ..

Fronts were all Cooler .. --- so --- Once I remove that 1 Tire and put on straighter Rim - Pretty sure those Temps will Even Up .
I Thought for sure I going to Find Axle Bearing reading 255-285 Degree , But Nothing even Close ..

Only Other Thing I able to think of is ( Back Lash ) way to Far out ?_? - Feels to Me it's Coming from the Rear of Vehicle .

Re: Hey All - Suspension Mod Question - 1 Ton

Up Date _ Looks Like Drive_Line Angles are Off !
Current Engine is pretty much all Hard Mounted = No Adjustments .
Hard Mounted everything . .

LOOKING TO MOD THE ENGINE & TRANSMISSION - Angles . . ?
Here the Issue Eng & Trans need to be Tilted Back more . .
Currently 4.57 Degrees on First Driveshaft .
Second Driveshaft 2.99 Degrees

Plus the Eaton is approx 2.75 in Staggered Off Center like most are .
Motor & Trans are on Center Line . ( NOT 3 Degree's ) - Toward the Rear Axle Eaton . .
