That girl would be a 1964 VW double cab. Belongs to my girlfriends brother as we all kind of share our company shop space (justified by the fact that our highway tractors don't fit through the door so we fill it with our personal projects haha)

Ok guys I'm running into serious wiring issues.... (Yes I hate electrical stuff)



Here is what I have laid out so far, my problem is the two black question marks, not sure first of all if I am at all correct but also now that I have removed the coil and switched to her I'm wondering what to do with the wire from the firewall plug that used to go to the coil.

Any help today would be greatly appreciated!!

Get rid of the wire from the HEI to the starter. It is not a true 12V. Take and run a wire from a switched 12V source directly to the HEI.

Some folks run a wire directly from the Fuse box switched connection to the HEI. I happened to use the 12V that was supposed to go to for the water temp light on the dash to the engine sensor. Since it was already in the harness and I wasn't using both the hot and cold light power leads, I used one for the HEI.

Some folks use the ign power to operate a relay that runs the HEI power straight from the battery.

I understand your first comment on going directly to the fuse panel but you lost me on ign power from battery straight to hei, would that not be the same? If I remove that wire from the HEI to the starter and go directly to the fuse box do I have to bring power to that side of the starter some other way or is the main wire good enough?

Sorry Im sure I've said it before but I'm terrrrrrrible with electronics

Thank you!! These were a huge help, I just could not visualize what was supposed to be going on, I think I have everything planned out and roughed in so tomorrow morning I hope to get over to the shop and put wire to metal.

Total side note but DEAR GOD I WANT MY OWN SHOP!! when we moved away from our old shop i figured it wasn't that bad, only a 20 minute drive from our new pace. But a 40 minute round trip just to do an hour or so of work here and there sure becomes very frustrating over time, its all fun and games if i have time to go for 5 or 6 hours but some days it sure sucks.

Not much to update but managed to figure out my wiring issues yesterday... rebuild and cleaned up my passenger side harness and tied it in with my air system harness, everything comes up pretty tidy.





Next step will be tackling the drivers side harness tomorrow if I can find some time. When I first bought the truck I drove it to a local shop because the horn would no longer work properly, when you pressed the horn it would sound and not stop, so due to my lack of electrical knowledge I figured I would take it to a pro.... turned out the asshole was too lazy "to figure out which one was the horn wire in all those wires". He actually drilled a hole in my dash (WITHOUT ASKING) and directly wired a push button straight to the horn... so now I have to figure out what was wrong there.....

It looks to me like you have long water pump pulleys with your short water pump. Do any of the belt grooves line up?

Ya it's hard to see now that everything's shiny and black but that bottom crank pulley has an inner pulley that lines up nicely with everything else.

So I wanted to switch up the fan from the ugly ol stocker and I decided to switch it up a little..
started with this guy



a little elbow grease and ended with this guy (have i told you how much i hate chrome and silver)




and here she is folks, finally done and spitting flames again! blew the fuel pump on start up but thats best of a bad situation i guess...

Next i started back at the ol rust issues.... fixing the PO's wicked repair jobs, like this one!!

Engine looks great sitting in there! Unfortunately with these old rigs there will be a lot to "de-silver and de-chrome" for you .

Thanks man, shot a whole lotta flames and just about burnt the shop down when the fuel pump let go but sure am happy with the way she runs too

Well got a couple hours in the shop this morning and the girly friend even lent me a hand to hang some doors, going to take some time to get them to fit properly but it was sure nice to see things going back together!!

First i took a dremel and gave myself a bigger groove to work with




A little bit of quick steel from the dirt bike world... apparently the bush boys use it repair case cracks in the woods so i hope it can hold up to a steering wheel..





Now todayI will try and sand it down and get the shape back t factor lines
